VAT on tips in the UK: what hospitality businesses really need to know 👇
✅ Tips = NO VAT
Voluntary tips are outside the scope of VAT - cash or card, it doesn’t matter.
This is confirmed by HMRC.
⚠️ Mandatory service charges = VAT applies
If a service charge is compulsory, it’s part of the taxable supply and VAT at 20% applies.
💡 Discretionary service charges = NO VAT
Only VAT-free if the customer can remove or change them.
👉 Tax & NICs
- All tips are subject to Income Tax
- NICs depend on control
- Direct tips → no NICs
- Employer-controlled tips → PAYE + NICs
- Independent tronc or digital tipping → no NICs
