MTD FOR INCOME TAX — NEXT DEADLINE: 7 NOVEMBER

If you are already within Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, your second quarterly update is approaching.

An important point: the update is cumulative.

Standard periods:
6 April → 5 October

Calendar periods:
1 April → 30 September

So it is not simply a report for the latest three months.

Keeping the bookkeeping current throughout the year makes these submissions much easier.

Need help with MTD bookkeeping, software or quarterly HMRC updates?

Taking dividends from your limited company?

There is more to it than transferring money from the company bank account.

Before a dividend is paid:

✅ The company needs sufficient available profits
✅ The dividend should be formally declared
✅ Directors’ minutes should be kept
✅ A dividend voucher should be produced

Paying out more than the company’s available profits can create problems later.

We help limited company owners with accounts, tax, payroll and dividend planning.

No company changes this year? Your confirmation statement is still due. Every company, including dormant and non-trading companies, must file at least once every 12 months. You can file up to 14 days after the review period ends. The current fee is £50 online or £110 by post.

Just registered for VAT? Check what you paid before registration. Eligible VAT on goods can normally go back up to 4 years if the goods are still held or used in the business, while services can normally go back 6 months. The claim is usually made on the first VAT return and needs supporting VAT invoices.

Is your home address showing publicly on Companies House?

Your company’s registered office address is public, so if you do not want your home address on the register, you should use a different suitable address.

It must also meet the Companies House appropriate address rules — company correspondence needs to reach someone acting for the company and delivery must be capable of being recorded.

Mysimplytax provides registered office support alongside company accounts and Companies House compliance.

Paying employer National Insurance? Check whether your business can claim Employment Allowance.

For 2026/27, eligible employers can reduce their employer Class 1 NI bill by up to £10,500.

A key exception is a limited company where one director is the only employee liable for employer NI.

If your payroll has changed, taken on staff or added another paid director, it may be worth reviewing your eligibility.

Mysimplytax supports businesses with payroll, PAYE and limited company accounts.

Income down? Reduce payments on account.

If your income or profits have fallen, your payments on account may no longer reflect what you actually expect to owe.

Payments on account are normally due on 31 January and 31 July, and are usually based on the previous year’s tax bill.

If your income is now lower, HMRC may allow you to reduce them.

Just be careful: if the payments are reduced too far and your final tax bill is higher, interest may apply.

It’s worth reviewing before 31 January.

Corporation Tax? Pay before you file.

Your Corporation Tax payment deadline will usually arrive before your Company Tax Return filing deadline.

For most companies with taxable profits up to £1.5 million:

✅ Corporation Tax is generally due 9 months and 1 day after the accounting period ends
✅ Company Tax Return is generally due 12 months after the accounting period ends

That means if your year end is 31 March, the tax is usually due by 1 January, while the return is usually due by 31 March.

If you run a limited company, keeping both dates clear is essential.

Had CIS tax deducted from a payment? Keep the statement.

CIS deductions are advance payments towards tax. The usual rate is 20% for subcontractors who are registered and can be verified by HMRC, or 30% if they are unregistered or cannot be verified. Gross payment status means no CIS deduction.

Sole traders and partners report the credit through Self Assessment. Limited companies report CIS deductions suffered through an Employer Payment Summary (EPS).

Keep every monthly payment and deduction statement so the tax already deducted can be accounted for correctly.

mysimplytax.com can help with CIS bookkeeping, returns and deductions.

Is your business getting close to the £90,000 VAT threshold?

Check your VAT-taxable turnover over the last 12 months at the end of every month. Going over £90,000 normally triggers compulsory registration.

There is a separate trigger if you realise your taxable turnover will exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone.

A regular check helps you plan for pricing, invoices and VAT returns as your business grows.

mysimplytax.com can help with VAT registration and bookkeeping in Bromley, London and across the UK.
