In the UK construction sector, subcontractor verification is a key step for correct payroll processing under the Construction Industry Scheme.
➡️ Before the first payment, contractors must verify subcontractors with HMRC. This determines the correct deduction rate: 0% (gross status), 20% (registered), or 30% (unregistered).
¬ Once verified, payroll applies the correct deduction from the labour portion of the invoice and records the verification reference number, which must be included in CIS reports submitted to HMRC. If verification is missing or outdated, the contractor must apply the 30% deduction rate, which can create unnecessary costs and compliance issues.
At Lexarox Payroll, we support contractors with subcontractor verification, CIS payroll processing, and HMRC reporting, helping businesses stay compliant and efficient.

KEY 2026 PAYROLL CHANGES AND TRENDS
• National Minimum Wage (NMW) & National Living Wage (NLW): From 1 April 2026, the NLW for those aged 21 and over will rise by 4.1% (50p) to £12.71 per hour.
• Real Living Wage (Higher Rate): The Living Wage Foundation announced increases for April 2026: £14.80 an hour in London (up 95p) and £13.45 for the rest of the UK (up 85p).
• Payroll Technology Trends: By 2026, payroll is transitioning from monthly processing to "always-on" systems that integrate directly with time and attendance data.
• Compliance and Reporting: HMRC has announced a new online PAYE service for employees, and new 2025-26 Real Time Information (RTI) data items are in place for software updates.
• Labour Market Data: Data shows a decline in the number of payrolled employees in the UK, marking 8 falls over 12 months.
• NHS Overpayments: NHS payroll data has shown an increase in referrals to bailiffs for collecting overpaid wages due to errors, making accuracy crucial in 2026.
These changes require employers to update their payroll systems to ensure compliance with the new statutory rates by April 2026.

Starting to hire in the UK? Then, PAYE registration is essential.
Before you pay your first employee, your business must be properly registered with HMRC for PAYE. This allows you to operate payroll legally, deduct Income Tax and National Insurance correctly, and report in real time. Delays or mistakes at this stage can slow recruitment, affect cash flow planning, and create avoidable compliance issues.
➡️ At Lexarox Payroll, we manage the entire PAYE registration process on your behalf, efficiently, accurately, and without unnecessary back-and-forth. From setting up your employer reference to preparing your payroll system for compliant reporting, we ensure everything is ready before your first payday.
If you’re hiring in the UK (whether it’s your first employee or you’re expanding your team), let’s make sure your PAYE registration is done properly from day one.

In construction, one missing step can quietly turn into a costly problem, you know that! Subcontractor verification is one of those steps. Before any payment is made, UK contractors are required to verify every subcontractor under the Construction Industry Scheme. It’s how HMRC decides the correct tax rate, and how your business stays compliant from day one.
Skip verification, or get it wrong, and the risk isn’t theoretical. Incorrect deductions, rejected CIS returns, penalties, and even the loss of Gross Payment Status can follow. What looks like “just admin” is actually one of the strongest audit triggers in the construction sector.
At Lexarox Payroll 👉 we handle subcontractor verification with precision and clarity, checking HMRC status, confirming deduction rates, and keeping your CIS records clean, current, and defensible. No guesswork. No last-minute surprises.
If you work with subcontractors, let’s make sure your CIS compliance is as strong as your projects. Message us to set up subcontractor verification before HMRC does the checking for you. Simple.

What’s new (and noteworthy) in UK payroll right now?
>>> Payroll isn’t standing still and neither is HMRC.
One of the biggest shifts on the horizon is how PAYE operates across labour supply chains. From 6 April 2026, umbrella companies won’t be the only ones responsible for correct tax and NIC reporting. Recruitment agencies, and even end clients, can now share liability if something goes wrong, making compliance a collective priority across the entire payroll chain.
~ At the same time, HMRC’s ongoing crackdown on payroll-linked schemes and tax avoidance models remains a key focus. Employers are being warned to do their own due diligence before engaging “discount” payroll solutions that claim to cut liabilities, because if HMRC finds errors or underpayments, you could be held accountable.
These updates aren’t just bureaucratic footnotes. They change who needs to think about payroll risk, responsibility and transparency in 2026, and they underscore why smart payroll isn’t just about processing figures, but about protecting your business.
Payroll isn’t just a back-office task anymore. It’s a strategic imperative, and the time to prepare is now.
