In the UK, the deadline to register for self-assessment is the 5th October following the end of the tax year in which you first needed to file a tax return. For example, if you first need to file a tax return for the 2025–26 tax year (which ended on 5 April 2026), you must register with HMRC by 5 October 2026. After registering, the key deadlines are:
• 31 October 2026 – paper tax return deadline.
• 31 January 2027 – online tax return deadline and payment deadline for any tax due.

Recently the government have confirmed that changes will be made to account filings via Companies House. These changes will take effect from the 1st April 2028. The most notable change is the requirement for small companies and micro-entities to file profit and loss accounts but with the option to opt out of publication.
Details of how smaller companies can opt out of publication of profit and loss will be confirmed in due course.

Did you know that from the 6th April, UK Statutory Sick Pay, SSP, changed. SSP is now paid from the first qualifying day of sickness, instead of starting on the fourth day. The Lower Earnings Limit has been removed, so workers no longer need to earn above a minimum weekly amount to qualify for SSP, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria. The standard SSP rate increased to £123.25 per week from 6 April 2026

The 2026 Commonwealth Games begin today in Glasgow running until the 2nd of August. It will be the 23rd Commonwealth Games and the second time Glasgow have acted as hosts. 74 Commonwealth members are expected to take part with roughly 3,000 competitors. Will you be tuning in to watch this or be attending in person?

From the 6th April, HMRC increased the approved rate for UK business mileage rates from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles per tax year. There is also a 5p per passenger per mile allowance when carrying fellow employees on qualifying business journeys. This rate applies to employee or a self-employed individuals who makes business journeys in their own vehicle..
