Do you know your gross profit margin—and why it matters?

Your sales may look healthy, but turnover alone doesn’t show how much money the business actually retains.

Your gross profit is what remains after you subtract the direct costs of delivering your product or service from your sales.

To calculate your gross profit margin:

Gross profit ÷ total sales × 100

Knowing your gross profit margin can help you understand whether your costs are increasing, whether your pricing is sustainable and how much you’re really making from each sale.

Have right-to-work checks changed for your business?

From 1 October 2026, responsibility for carrying out right-to-work checks has expanded beyond traditional employment.

The new rules can also apply when businesses engage people through other working arrangements, including:

Gig-economy workers

Casual and temporary workers

Agency workers

Certain individual subcontractors

Online matching services

If your business uses people outside a traditional employer–employee relationship, don’t assume the responsibility for checking their right to work automatically belongs to somebody else.

Now is the time to review who works within your business, how they are engaged and whether the correct checks and records are in place.

Has your right-to-work process been updated to reflect the new rules?

Are your figures telling you what happened—or helping you decide what happens next?

Annual accounts are important, but they are largely a record of what has already happened.

By the time you review them, the decisions that created those figures may have been made months ago.

Up-to-date financial information should help you answer the questions your business is facing now:

Can we afford to employ somebody?

Which services are actually making us money?

Do our prices still work?

What will our cash position look like over the next few months?

Is this the right time to invest or grow?

Your numbers won’t make the decisions for you.

But when you understand what they are telling you, you can make those decisions with far more clarity and confidence.

Are you using your figures to look backwards—or to plan what happens next?

If you need help turning your numbers into a plan, get in touch.

5 signs it may be time to review your prices
It doesn’t automatically mean increasing them.

YOUR COSTS HAVE INCREASED
Software, suppliers, wages and overheads may have risen while your prices have stayed the same.

THE WORK TAKES LONGER
Extra meetings, revisions, administration and support all add to the real cost of delivering your service.

YOU’RE CONSTANTLY AT FULL CAPACITY
If demand is consistently greater than the time available, does your pricing still make sense?

YOUR SERVICE HAS IMPROVED
More experience, better systems and an improved client experience can all increase the value you provide.

YOUR PROFIT MARGIN IS SHRINKING
More sales don’t necessarily mean more profit—especially when your costs are rising too.

A price review isn’t always about charging more.

It’s about making sure your prices still work for your customers—and your business.

When did you last review yours?

If you are not making the most of your tax-deductible expenses, you are losing money.

There is no defined list of what you can and can't claim

Stilettos may not be on your list, but dont assume that just because someone else can't claim for something, you can't either. (And visa versa!)

Speaking to an accountant will give you a clear picture of what is right for you, and your business.

Get in touch and lets make sure you are claiming for everything that you are entitled to

Are you waiting to feel ready for that next exciting step?

Are you thinking about introducing a new service,
increasing your prices,
bringing somebody in to help
or finally saying yes to an opportunity that has always felt slightly too big?

What if feeling ready doesn’t come first?

Does confidence need to come before you take action?

Or does doing the uncomfortable thing—and working through the nerves and uncertainty—help you realise you’re more capable than you’ve allowed yourself to believe?

You may never feel completely ready.

But perhaps you are ready. You just need to feel prepared enough to take those first steps.

When you understand your numbers, it becomes easier to plan for success, consider the potential obstacles and make decisions with confidence.

If you have a big step you’re considering, get in touch and let’s work towards it together.

You may discover that you’re more ready than you think.

Are you clear about how to calculate your markup versus your profit margin?

They’re often confused—but they’re very different.

Markup is the percentage added to the cost to calculate the selling price.

Profit margin is the percentage of the total selling price that is profit.

For example:

Cost: £50

Selling price: £100

Profit: £50

Markup: 100%

Profit margin: 50%

Why does that matter?

Because confusing margin with markup when setting your prices could mean you’re making considerably less profit than you expected.

If you’re not clear on your numbers—or whether your prices are delivering the margin you need—get in touch.

Knowing the difference could change the way you price.
