If you started working for yourself during the 2025/26 tax year, today * 5 October 2026 * is the deadline to tell HMRC that you need to register for Self Assessment.

Not sure whether you need to register? Don't ignore it, it's worth checking now.

If you're unsure what you need to do, send me a message and I can point you in the right direction.

💊 Are your company finances giving you a headache?

It might not be because your business is doing badly.

Sometimes the biggest headache comes from simply not knowing what’s happening with your numbers.

You’re busy running your business, serving customers, and getting the work done... but who’s keeping an eye on the finances?

Having the right qualified and knowledgeable person helping you can give you clarity and direction.

I can help you understand your figures, keep things organised, stay on top of your tax obligations, and make informed decisions about your business.

Because your accounts shouldn’t just tell you what happened last year — they should help you understand where your business is heading.

If your finances feel a little overwhelming, you don't necessarily need to work harder.

You might need the right person in your corner. 💙

Spooner Accounting = taking the headache out of your business finances.

I’m more than an accountant… I’m a cake maker too!🎂

My dad’s 60th birthday called for a special cake, so I decided to make one myself.

The big 60 — Terry’s Chocolate Orange for the 6 and a fruitcake for the 0. 🍊🍫

And just for context… that cake board is 14 × 20 inches! It was definitely bigger than I first planned! 😂

And I have to say… it tasted AMAZING! 🙌

Because I’m more than an accountant. I’m also a mum, a business owner, a problem solver, a learner, a creative thinker… and a birthday cake maker 💁🏻‍♀️

That’s one of the things I love about being self-employed. There’s always something new to learn, create, or try.

Spooner Accounting — more than just numbers. 💙

📚 When your accounts start to sound like Dr. Seuss…

I picked this book up from the library for Rory, and this page had me completely tongue-tied! 😂

If you're not an accountant, accounts can sometimes feel like a load of gobbledygook.

Profit and loss. VAT. CIS. MTD. 🤯

You don't need to understand it all, that's what I'm here for!

I take the complicated stuff and turn it into clear, straightforward information about what's actually happening in your business. 💙

And maybe there's another little lesson in this book too…

Don't forget to appreciate how far you've come, even if you're not quite where you want to be yet. ❤️

You bring me the numbers.
I'll make sense of them. 😉

🤠🔨 Ever wondered where the phrase "cowboy builder" actually comes from?

With all the talk about cowboy builders in the news at the moment, it got me thinking… where did the term actually come from?

It's not because real cowboys were dishonest!

The word cowboy originally meant someone who herded cattle. But over time, especially in the 1900s, it became slang for someone who was reckless, unqualified or ignored the rules.

By the 1970s, the phrase "cowboy builder" had started being used in the UK to describe tradespeople who cut corners, did poor-quality work or took people's money and ran.

A bit unfair on actual cowboys, really. They were skilled, hardworking and tough people. 🐎

As someone married to a builder, I'd say there's a world of difference between a genuine tradesperson who takes pride in their work... and a "cowboy".

Did you know that's where the saying came from?

This is what being a working mum and business owner really looks like sometimes… 🥰

Answering work messages and emails while getting my baby to sleep.

Not because I'm trying to squeeze work into every second of the day, but because running my own business gives me the flexibility to work around my family.

We come in all different shapes and sizes, and so do our businesses. There isn't one way to be a “working mum”.

For me, it's about being there for my children and building something I'm proud of.

It might not always look perfect, but honestly… I think I've got the best of both worlds. 💙

Xero is brilliant. AI is brilliant. But neither replaces your accountant.

I saw the recent Xero/AI story and thought… really?! 😂

It's like giving someone a plasterer's tools and expecting them to produce a professional finish.

"All the gear, no idea 💡"

The tools aren't the skill.

Xero is only as good as the information you put into it and someone still needs to know whether that information is actually right.

That's why I love using Xero with my clients.

Technology + the right expertise = 👌

Not technology instead of expertise.

In a Xero-sponsored post, an British entrepreneur said she could save hundreds of dollars in accounting fees each month by connecting Xero to Claude instead.

I DID IT! 🥹💙

Today I faced one of my biggest fears of public speaking, giving my first talk to a room full of self-employed people.

I was nervous beforehand, but everyone was brilliant - asking questions, getting involved and making it feel much more like a conversation than a talk.

I'm proud of myself for pushing outside my comfort zone and doing something that genuinely scared me.

And yes… I even did it in my new Spooner Accounting branded clothing! 😁💙

Turns out I can do scary things after all! 💪

Supporting local, one stitch at a time. 💙

When I decided to get some branded clothing for Spooner Accounting, I didn't have to look far.

I used Toolmonkey right here in Leighton Buzzard to create my new workwear and I love how it's turned out!

Two T-shirts, a hoodie and a cap, all with the Spooner Accounting logo.

Not only does it mean I can represent my business wherever I go, but I'm also supporting another local business along the way.

Local businesses supporting local businesses. That's something I really believe in. 💙

If you're a local business looking for branded workwear, definitely check them out.
