Can AI do your accounts or do you still need an accountant or bookkeeper?

There has been a lot of talk recently about AI replacing accountants and bookkeepers. Here's why I'm not worried....

AI is a predictive tool that uses the data it can find to work out what is the likely best outcome. Unfortunately, there is a lot of wrong information out there about completing accounts and remaining tax compliant, so AI is very likely to get it wrong.... and unless you have eagle eyes and have passed your exams, you are unlikely to spot the errors.

AI doesn't have the knowledge and experience of a qualified professional that can look at a set of books and know instinctively that they are wrong and where to look to make it right.

If you upload your data into AI, unless your security settings are right, you are giving it your data to train the model and allowing others to access your confidential data too. Even with security settings in place, I wouldn't upload data that I hadn't anonymised first!

There is also a huge environmental impact around using AI too. We need to ensure we are using it mindfully and responsibly. Can AI replace bookkeepers?

Social media is full of talk about AI replacing bookkeepers and accountants. Everyone is vibe-coding, and automation is the buzzword for everything.

Personally, I don't think we are about to be replaced. I heard the same messaging when cloud accounting was first released, and I have never been busier!

Just because technology can do a job doesn't mean it's the right thing to do, and it doesn't mean it'll get it right either!

AI uses pattern recognition to find the most likely solution. It trawls the available data on the internet. That includes wrong answers as well as the right ones. AI hasn't passed its accountancy exams and lacks the experienced eye of a trained professional, too. Expenses need to be coded with nuance, and that requires understanding the context around a purchase.

AI is just a tool. It can be incredibly helpful if used wisely and thoughtfully, but will it replace us? I don't think so. I think that wise business owners will still value having a human in their corner. One that explains the numbers in a way they can understand. Someone who is there as a trusted advisor.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to you?

Not sure where to start?

The first step is to make sure you have a separate business bank account. There are free ones out there.

Next step is to choose some MTD Compatible software and connect your bank account. It's read only access, and means your transactions are automatically pushed into your software. FreeAgent is free with a Mettle bank account

Take photos of your receipts to attach to your transactions.

Start now. You can backdate your bank feed to the start of the tax year. Don't wait until you are mandated for MTD.

Does Making Tax Digital change how you pay tax?

NO! There's no change to your payment dates of January and July.

The change is how you report your income to HMRC.
