I’m working with a client at the moment where cash is tight.
A few months ago, one of the things we needed to sort out was invoicing. We put a monthly process in place so customers were actually being invoiced properly and on time.
That part is now working.
What became obvious next was that getting the invoices out was only half the job.
There’s now around £8,000 outstanding, with some of it building up over the last three months.
So we’ve started putting a proper credit control process in place as well.
We’ve set up standard first and second reminder emails. The older debts will be followed up by phone, politely, to find out when payment is likely and whether a payment plan might be needed.
We’re also looking at whether Direct Debit could help with collections in future, and whether some customers should pay upfront.
In my experience, regular reminders from an actual person often make the biggest difference.
This is the bit of bookkeeping I really enjoy.
Not just getting the accounts up to date, but spotting what the numbers are telling us and then finding a practical way to improve it.
