The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, which means we all get an extra hour ⏰

Our proposal: spend just 20 minutes matching five receipts, checking overdue invoices and looking at the payments due next week. Then use the other 40 minutes for something much more enjoyable.

It is a tiny tidy-up, not a full finance marathon, but small, regular checks can stop the admin pile becoming a much bigger job.

If chasing an invoice makes you feel awkward, you are not alone, but you do not need to apologise for asking about an agreed payment 😅

Start with a calm, practical message:

“Hi [name], just checking invoice [number], due on [date], has reached the right person. Please let me know if you need anything from me.”

Check the payment terms and contact details first, attach the invoice again and make it easy for the customer to respond. If there is a genuine issue, you want to find it quickly. If there is not, a clear reminder may be all that is needed.

Try moving three things onto one clear list:

• What is due
• What is owed to you
• What needs a decision

It sounds simple, but turning a swirl of reminders into visible actions can make the next step feel much clearer. Share the list with the people who need to see it and decide who is doing what.

If your VAT period ended on 31 August, the usual return and payment deadline is 7 October 2026.

Before filing, take a quick pause and check:

• Are all sales included?
• Have the purchase invoices been checked?
• Is there anything unusual that needs reviewing?
• Is the payment ready to go?

Some VAT arrangements follow different deadlines, so use the date in your VAT account as the final word.

A short check now can prevent a much longer search later. If the records are not quite as tidy as you hoped, give us a call, no judgement about the receipt drawer.

Thinking ahead to a small team treat? 🎁

Some low-cost employee benefits can qualify as “trivial benefits”, meaning there is no tax or National Insurance to pay and nothing to report to HMRC. However, all of the conditions must be met.

The benefit must cost £50 or less, must not be cash or a cash voucher, must not be contractual and must not be a reward for work or performance. Directors of close companies are also subject to a £300 total cap in the tax year.

Keep a record of the cost and reason for the benefit, and check the position if you are unsure.

Is your confirmation statement coming up? Make identity verification part of the preparation 🪪

Every company director must verify their identity and provide their Companies House personal code for the company’s next confirmation statement. Companies House will not accept the statement until all directors have verified.

People with significant control also have requirements to complete, and someone who is both a director and a PSC may need to provide their code separately for each role.

Check the register and start early, especially if the company has several directors. A missing verification should not be the reason a routine filing becomes a last-minute problem.

An unexpected HMRC message lands in your inbox and tells you to act now. What should you do? 🚨

Stop before clicking any link or sharing personal or payment information. Check the contact through GOV.UK or your usual HMRC account, rather than using the details in the message.

You can forward suspicious HMRC emails to [email protected] and suspicious texts to 60599.

Scam messages often rely on urgency, so make “stop, check, report” part of your business routine. It is also worth making sure employees who deal with payroll, invoices or tax know what to do.

A Self Assessment deadline is approaching 📅

You must tell HMRC by 5 October 2026 if you need to complete a return for the 2025/26 tax year and either:

• you have not sent a tax return before, or
• you were registered previously but did not need to send a return for 2024/25.

Registering does not mean your return is due on 5 October, but it makes sure HMRC knows you need to file and gives you time to get everything organised.

If you are unsure whether a change in income or circumstances means you need to register, speak to us before the deadline.
