Today's the day. Don't Let HMRC Catch You Out is officially out.

Sam Mallabar and I wrote this book because we kept having the same conversations with sole traders and landlords. Capable people who have handled their own tax returns for years now feel unsure about what Making Tax Digital means for them and worried they will get it wrong.

For anyone with qualifying income over £50,000, MTD is no longer something coming down the line. It started in April and the next quarterly update is due on 7 November. For those over £30,000, it arrives in April 2027. That gives you time to get set up properly but only if you start now rather than next spring.

The book is written in plain English for people who want to understand what they need to do and get on with it. No jargon, no scaremongering and no pushing you towards software you don't need.

If you started your self-employment in the last tax year ended 5 April 2026 then the deadline for registering with HMRC is 5 October.
