We've all been there.

Something's been playing on your mind all day, and suddenly it's 11pm and you're 14 Google searches deep trying to work out whether you've done something wrong.

Do I need to tell HMRC about this?
Can I actually claim that as an expense?
Have I missed something important?
Am I going to end up with a massive tax bill?

And the more you search, the more confused you get.

Here's the thing.

You shouldn't have to spend your evenings trying to figure out things your accountant should be helping you understand.

Good accountancy isn't just about submitting your returns on time.

It's about having someone you can ask questions, who explains things in plain English and helps you make decisions with confidence.

So close the 15 tabs.

And ask your accountant instead.

Vicky's prediction for the Autumn Budget? A tough one.

With the pressure on public finances, she wouldn't be surprised to see further tax increases, potential changes to Capital Gains Tax and tighter rules around pensions.

For business owners, these changes could have significant impact on future financial planning.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but it's certainly a Budget we will be watching closely.

What are your predictions?

Myth or fact? "With Making Tax Digital, I have to pay tax every three months."

MYTH! Quarterly updates are just a summary of your income and expenses. They do not mean a quarterly tax bill.

You still pay your tax on the usual dates, 31 January and 31 July.

Want to know what you do need to do before 7 November? Our blog this Friday explains it all.

An overdrawn director's loan account rarely happens on purpose.

A personal purchase on the business card. A transfer to cover a bill. Dividends taken without checking the profits are there. Before long, the director owes the company thousands.

Left too long, that balance can trigger an extra tax charge for the company, and the refund can take well over a year to come back.

This week's blog explains how to spot it early and what to do about it.

It is one of the most common assumptions among new company directors, and it is understandable. You built the business, you did the work, and the money is sitting in the account.

But a limited company is a separate legal person. Its money belongs to the company, not to you. To take money out properly, it needs to come out as salary, dividends, expense reimbursements or, if none of those apply, as a loan that is recorded on your director's loan account.

Getting this right keeps your tax position clean and avoids unwelcome surprises at year end. Friday's blog explains more.

Making Tax Digital means quarterly updates.
But does it mean paying your tax four times a year?
No.

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you’ll need to keep digital records and send updates to HMRC throughout the year.

But your tax payment deadlines aren’t automatically becoming quarterly too.
You’ll still pay your Income Tax through the usual Self Assessment payment deadlines — including 31 January, and 31 July where payments on account apply.

So yes, you’ll be reporting more regularly.
But no, you won’t suddenly have four tax bills landing throughout the year.

Still confused about what Making Tax Digital actually means for you?
Speak to the Solutions team and we’ll make sure you know exactly what you need to do — and when.

New blog post live today on the Solutions Accountancy website!

Identity verification at Companies House is now compulsory for company directors and people with significant control, and the transition period for existing directors ends on 18 November 2026.

If a director has not verified by the time the company's confirmation statement is due, the company will not be able to file it. Our latest guide explains who needs to verify, when, how to do it and what the personal code is for.

You own more than one limited company.
But did you know that could affect how much Corporation Tax you pay?

If you have control of more than one company, they may be classed as associated companies for Corporation Tax purposes.
And this is where it matters.

The Corporation Tax profit thresholds are divided between the number of associated companies.
So instead of one company having the full thresholds available to it, those thresholds can become much smaller.
Which could mean you hit the higher Corporation Tax rate sooner than you expected.

It’s one of those rules that can easily catch business owners out - especially if you’ve built up interests in multiple companies over the years.
Own or control more than one company?

It’s worth checking how the associated company rules apply to you before your Corporation Tax bill comes as a surprise.
Speak to the Solutions team and we can help you understand exactly where you stand.
