One million people, mostly women, are due to receive letters from HMRC explaining how they are eligible for top-up payments. It's not a scam.

Those entitled are low earners who missed out on the money because of how their pension is administered. Typically they will be due £70, but that may vary considerably depending on their circumstances.

Anyone eligible - the vast majority of whom will be of working age rather than pensioners - will be contacted automatically. While this is not a scam, please be vigilant and check!

The Making Tax Digital numbers are in!

Over 570,000 have signed up for MTD but HMRC estimates around 864,000 taxpayers should be using the system for 2026/27.

That’s quite a gap. So, from this month HMRC will begin signing up taxpayers who should have registered but haven't.

The first deadline may be behind us, but MTD is just getting started. The best time to get ready is before HMRC has to remind you … now!

The tax experts at Hargreaves Owen are here to help. From informative webinars to practical, jargon-free advice, we can help you navigate Making Tax Digital. Start with an initial discussion without obligation.

HMRC has issued a new scam warning as reports rise.

HMRC is alerting taxpayers to a rise in fraudulent messages impersonating the tax authority. It says it is receiving increased reports of scam emails claiming people are due a Self-Assessment tax refund for 2024-25. These emails pressure recipients to act urgently and provide personal or bank details.

HMRC stresses it will never send an email with an urgent deadline to claim a tax refund. To check a legitimate refund, taxpayers should log in securely via GOV.UK or the HMRC app. HMRC urges people to stop and think before sharing information or opening links/attachments in unexpected messages.

If unsure, do not click anything and report the message to HMRC. GOV.UK provides a list of genuine HMRC contact details to help verify messages.

Suspicious phone calls can be reported through HMRC's online service (requires email or sign-in).

Suspicious text messages should be forwarded to 60599 (network charges apply). HMRC will never notify you of a tax rebate or request personal/payment details by text message.

Suspicious emails can be forwarded to [email protected], then deleted to avoid accidental clicks.

Pensions are to be included in IHT calculations from April 2027.

From April 2027, unused defined contribution (DC) pensions will be counted as part of a person's estate for inheritance tax (IHT). This is a significant shift from current rules where most DC pensions fall outside the estate. Defined benefit (DB) pensions remain unaffected.

Estates above the nil rate band will face a 40% IHT charge. It is believed that 10,500 estates will pay IHT for the first time and 38,500 estates will see higher bills, averaging £34,000 extra. However, this change will only see a move from 5% to 8% of all estates paying IHT.

Are you impacted? Talk to us for tax-saving advice.
