Stop Blindly Relying on Your Accounting Software ⚠️
As the owner of a small accountancy practice working with sole traders and small limited companies, I see the same issue time and time again: business owners assume that if the software says it's right, it must be right.
Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
Modern accounting software like Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent is fantastic. It can automate bank feeds, suggest coding, raise invoices and generate reports. But it's only as good as the information fed into it.
I've seen:
✅ Personal expenses coded as business costs
✅ Loan repayments treated as expenses
✅ VAT errors caused by incorrect settings
✅ Duplicate transactions inflating profits or expenses
✅ Directors' purchases incorrectly recorded
The software doesn't know your business as well as you do. It follows rules and algorithms, but it can't spot every mistake or understand the full story behind a transaction.
The result? Inaccurate accounts, unexpected tax bills, poor business decisions, and sometimes costly HMRC corrections.
Think of accounting software as a very helpful assistant, not a replacement for professional advice. Regular reviews of your bookkeeping can identify issues early and ensure your numbers actually tell the true story of your business.
Remember: good software saves time, but good accounting saves money.
If you're not sure whether your bookkeeping is giving you the right picture, it may be time for a professional health check.
