Benefits in Kind: New Payrolling Rules 🚨

From April 2027, most benefits in kind will need to be reported through payroll instead of P11D forms.

HMRC has confirmed that employers can choose to exclude globally mobile employees from mandatory payrolling, allowing existing P11D reporting arrangements to continue.

With changes approaching, now is a good time to review your payroll processes and make sure you’re prepared.

💼 Divorce, Separation & Tax: What You Need to Know

Dividing assets during a divorce or separation can have important tax implications.

🏠 Property, pensions, savings and investments may all be affected, while Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rules can influence how and when assets are transferred.

Transfers between separating spouses may qualify for ‘no gain, no loss’ treatment, potentially reducing immediate CGT liabilities. However, the timing and terms of the agreement matter.

📌 Seeking professional legal and tax advice early can help you avoid unexpected tax bills and make informed financial decisions.

National Minimum Wage & Living Wage: Are you paying the correct rate?

From 1st April 2026, the minimum hourly rates are:

• 21+ – £12.71
• 18–20 – £10.85
• Under 18 – £8.00
• Apprentices – £8.00 (where eligible)

Apprentices aged 19+ move onto the relevant age-based rate once they complete their first year.

💷 Failing to pay the correct rate can result in HMRC requiring arrears to be repaid, alongside significant penalties.

Employers should review pay rates regularly, particularly when employees have birthdays or apprentices complete their first year.

📁 Keep Your Self-Assessment Records!

Submitting your Self-Assessment tax return isn’t the end of the process. It’s important to keep the records and documents used to prepare your return, as HMRC may ask to review them.

Records can be kept digitally, on paper or using accounting software, as long as they’re accurate, complete and accessible.

For personal tax returns, records should generally be kept for at least 22 months after the end of the relevant tax year. Self-employed individuals have longer retention requirements, generally at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline.

📌 Keep supporting documents such as P60s, P45s, expense records, pension and investment statements, rental income records and evidence for any tax reliefs claimed.

Good record keeping can help you stay compliant and avoid potential HMRC penalties.

Staying on top of your payroll reporting is essential! 📋

Remember, a Full Payment Submission (FPS) must be sent to HMRC on or before every payday. It should include all employees, even if they earn below the National Insurance threshold, and report pay, tax, National Insurance and any deductions accurately.

Submitting on time and correcting any errors promptly can help you avoid unnecessary issues with HMRC. Need help with payroll? We're here to make it simple.
