The reasons most small businesses struggle and how you can fix it.

Most business owners we talk to are doing the work, but the numbers just aren’t following. The issues almost always fall into these four categories -

1️⃣ Cash Flow Timing - you have the work, but the bank account is empty.
2️⃣ Margin - you’re busy, but you aren’t actually making money on the jobs.
3️⃣ Overhead - your "engine" is too expensive for the amount of fuel you have.
4️⃣ Broken Model - the market has moved, and the old way doesn't work.

The Fix? Stop hoping and start acting.

Cash problem? Tighten your forecasting and credit control.

Margin problem? Stop loss-making work and reprice now.

Overhead problem? Right-size to your actual turnover.

Model problem? Pivot or plan an orderly exit.

The biggest mistake isn't the problem itself, it’s diagnosing it and then waiting for it to fix itself. It won’t.

Decisive action protects your business, your team and your personal assets. If the numbers feel 'off,' that is your cue.

Clarity. Plan. Act. πŸ› οΈ

Making Tax Digital is officially here, let’s look ahead to the next phase!

With MTD for Income Tax now live for those earning over Β£50,000, HMRC is set to roll out the next phases to bring more sole traders and landlords into digital tax reporting.

Here is what the expansion timeline looks like:

πŸ”Έ April 2026: Live for qualifying income over Β£50,000
πŸ”Έ April 2027: Expanding to qualifying income over Β£30,000
πŸ”Έ April 2028: Lowering further to qualifying income over Β£20,000

What does this mean for you?

Instead of filing a single end of year return, you'll maintain digital records and send quarterly updates using HMRC compatible software.

Getting ahead of the changes now will save you time, keep your books accurate and make transitioning seamless before your start date hits!

A Unique Taxpayer Reference is a 10-digit code that uniquely identifies you or your business with HMRC. UTR's are used by HMRC whenever they're dealing with your tax situation.

You'll receive a UTR when you register for self assessment. You can also receive UTR numbers when you register for a partnership, limited company etc with HMRC.

Where can you find your UTR number?

The easiest ways are:

βœ… Your Government Gateway account
βœ… The HMRC App
βœ… Any document from HMRC that you've received

You can also contact HMRC if you can't find your UTR number and they'll send a copy in the post to you. This is another reason why it's vital to keep your contact information current with HMRC πŸ‘

Stay on track and crush your business goals! πŸš€

Want to take your business to the next level? Check out our top tips to help you stay organised, focused, and growing:

πŸ”Ή Stay organised: Use a digital calendar or planner. Apps like Trello or Google Workspace are fantastic for keeping on top of your daily tasks.

πŸ”Ή Set achievable goals: Break things down! Reaching small milestones keeps you energised and gives you clear targets to work toward.

πŸ”Ή Create (or review) a business plan: A solid plan acts as your roadmap. Periodically look back at it to ensure you are staying aligned with your vision.

πŸ”Ή Track your numbers: Keep a close eye on your cash flow. Software like QuickBooks or Xero makes it easy to monitor your expenses and revenue in real time.

πŸ”Ή Keep an eye on the future: Don't just focus on today. Looking ahead helps you spot opportunities, foresee potential hurdles, and weather economic shifts.

Planning to incorporate a limited company? Here is what you need to know about the registration process.

If you are preparing to launch a new corporate venture, the incorporation process requires an essential compliance step. All new company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) must verify their identity before a company can be officially formed.

While this adds a step to your pre-launch checklist, the digital process is straightforward:

βœ… The Verification: You will complete a secure online identity check using the Welcome to GOV.UK One Login system with a biometric ID (such as a passport or driving licence).

βœ… The Personal Code: Once verified, you will receive a unique 11-character Personal Code, which links securely to your future directorships.

βœ… The Incorporation: With your code secured, your company formation can proceed through Companies House without delay.

Launching a business is an exciting milestone, but ensuring your corporate structure and statutory compliance are correct from day one is critical to your long-term success.

From choosing the most tax-efficient structure to managing your Companies House filings and director setup, we are here to ensure your business starts on the strongest possible footing.
