"If the bank balance looks fine, we're fine."
It's a common way to check in on a business. And at an early stage, it can work well enough.
But as a business grows, that same check tells you far less than it used to.
A healthy bank balance today doesn't show what's due out next week. It doesn't show which invoices are still unpaid. It doesn't show whether last month's growth was actually profitable, or just busy. And it doesn't tell you whether you can afford the decision in front of you.
This is a common gap we see as businesses scale past the early stages. The method that worked at £200k turnover doesn't hold up in the same way at £800k.
What replaces it is proper visibility: a cash flow forecast, and management accounts that show what's actually happening, not just what's sitting in the account today.
It's not about checking your finances more often. It's about checking the right things.
