📢 REMINDER – MAKING TAX DIGITAL IS NOW LIVE!

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) officially went live from 6 April 2026 for the first group of taxpayers.

If your qualifying income from self-employment and/or property was over £50,000, you may now be required to follow the new MTD rules.

This means moving away from the traditional once-a-year approach and keeping digital records, using MTD-compatible software and submitting quarterly updates to HMRC.

If you’re a Johnston Accountants client who falls into the first MTD tier, we’ll be helping you through the new requirements and making sure you know exactly what you need to do.

⚠️ Not sure whether MTD applies to you?

Please don’t leave it until your first quarterly deadline. Get in touch with the Johnston Accountants team and we can confirm whether you’re affected and what needs to be in place.

MTD is no longer coming – it’s here.

And just like that, we’ve reached the final day of National Payroll Week! 💷

I thought I’d finish the week with one final fact that really highlights the importance of payroll.

💡 According to the CIPP, the pay industry contributes £474 billion to the UK economy each year through the collection of Income Tax and National Insurance.

That’s a huge figure, and a really powerful reminder that payroll is about so much more than simply producing payslips.

Behind every payroll is a lot happening quietly behind the scenes — PAYE and National Insurance calculations, pensions, statutory payments, tax code updates, starters and leavers, HMRC submissions and all the checks that help make sure everything runs smoothly.

But ultimately, it all comes down to something very simple:

Making sure people are paid accurately and on time.

As National Payroll Week comes to an end, it feels like the perfect time to recognise the important role payroll plays in supporting businesses, employees and the wider UK economy.

Thank you to all of our clients who trust us to look after such an important part of their business each month.

It’s been lovely celebrating National Payroll Week with you this week.

Happy National Payroll Week! 🎉

💷 National Payroll Week — Day 3!

💡 PAYROLL MYTH: Your payroll provider decides your tax code.

Actually, tax codes are normally issued by HMRC.
Your payroll provider uses the tax code supplied by HMRC when processing your pay, so if your tax code doesn’t look right, it doesn’t necessarily mean your payroll has been processed incorrectly.

If HMRC sends us an updated tax code, we’ll apply it to your payroll accordingly. ✅

Just one of the many little things happening behind the scenes in payroll!

💷 National Payroll Week — Day 2!

A smooth payroll starts with good communication. ✅
If you employ staff, remember to let your payroll provider know about any changes before your payroll is processed, including:

👋 New starters
🚪 Leavers
⏰ Overtime or changes to hours
💷 Pay rises, bonuses or deductions
🤒 Sickness or other statutory leave
🏦 Changes to employee details

Sending us changes as early as possible helps make sure everyone is paid correctly and on time — and avoids those last-minute payroll panics! 😅

If you’re ever unsure whether we need to know about something, just ask — we’d always rather know.

🎉 It’s National Payroll Week! 🎉

This week, we’re celebrating the people behind payroll and the work that goes into ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time.

Payroll might happen quietly behind the scenes, but there’s a lot involved — from PAYE and National Insurance to pensions, statutory payments, new starters, leavers and ever-changing legislation!

We’ll be sharing a few payroll tips and facts throughout the week to celebrate. 💷

Happy National Payroll Week! 🥳
