Inflation stays at 3% is today's morning news. Given recent events across the globe I am now expecting inflation as well as interest rates to nudge up a couple of times between now and the end of the year. Savers will be happy, mortgage holders less so.
UK inflation rate stays at 3% in year to February - live updates
The latest figures, collected before the US-Israel war with Iran began, show inflation remains above the Bank of England's 2% target.

Happy birthday to us...25 years old!!
I am delighted to announce our 25th birthday.
My aim when I started the business was to always give everyone genuine, honest advice, and whilst a lot has changed in the business over the years, that focus on honesty hasn’t changed. I think in life and in business, if you act with honesty and integrity, you are hopefully not too far away from being successful.
So, I just wanted to say a genuine thank you to everyone who’s worked with us , whether for 25 years or just recently. I really do value your trust and support. Looking ahead, whilst I can’t promise to be around for the next 25 years, when I do eventually start working a little less, with Fraser now firmly progressing with his advice career, I know that the business will remain in good hands to continue that quality advice for many years to come. Thank you!

We always like to celebrate success here at Simple and I am delighted to say that our very own Charlie Mackay has today passed the Chartered Insurance Institute (R05) exam as he continues his journey to be becoming a fully qualified IFA. Well done Charlie and well deserved after all the hard work.

Genuinely gutted that Bocadillo Coffee Shop Sauchiehall street has closed. My morning routine for a decade 🥲
Needs must though and a lovely coffee and chat at Crema Coffee Co. this morning.
Happy Wednesday everyone. Here’s to a really positive day for all 👍

No great surprise to see Bank of England reduce interest rates to 4%., their lowest in 2 years. Won't change anything in short term other than some savings rates may nudge lower, and for mortgage clients, most are in fixed rates so won't benefit for a while yet.
However, a positive message and sentiment that the overall trajectory is down which is welcome.

A reminder that in investing, protecting the downside is just as important, if not more so, than chasing returns.
That's why our investment service focusses on both.
This graph illustrates the nature of investment losses and gains. For example, a 10% loss requires an 11% gain to break even, but a 50% loss requires a 100% gain just to return to the original value.
The deeper the loss, the harder it is to recover.

5 Reasons to Consolidate Your Pensions Before Retirement.
If you’re like many people approaching retirement, chances are you’ve accumulated a handful of pensions over the years — workplace schemes, personal pensions, maybe even a stakeholder plan or two. They’re scattered across different providers, collecting dust (and charges).
But as retirement comes into view, it’s worth asking: is it time to bring them together?
Here are 5 great reasons why consolidating your pensions could make perfect sense:
1️⃣ Clarity and Control
Multiple pensions can feel messy. Consolidation gives you one clear pot to focus on — making it far easier to track progress, understand your income potential, and stay in control of your financial future.
2️⃣ Potentially Lower Costs
Old pensions can carry outdated, expensive charging structures. By consolidating into a modern, streamlined plan, you may well cut down on unnecessary costs, which means more of your money stays invested.
3️⃣ the Right Investment Strategy for you
When pensions are dotted around, your overall investment strategy can become disjointed. Consolidating allows you to create a coherent, retirement-focused plan that reflects your goals, your attitude to risk.
4️⃣ Easier to Manage Retirement Income
When the time comes to start drawing income, life is far simpler with one well-managed pension pot. You’ll have a clear plan for withdrawals, tax efficiency, and flexibility — whether that’s via drawdown or annuity options.
5️⃣ Greater Peace of Mind
Ultimately, consolidation gives you confidence and peace of mind.
You’ll know exactly what you’ve got, how it’s performing, and how it’s aligned to your retirement goals.
🔑 Final Thought
Consolidation isn’t right for everyone. Charges, guarantees, and benefits need careful checking. But for many, bringing pensions together is a smart step towards a clearer, more confident retirement.
If you’re wondering whether this might be right for you, let’s have a chat. Retirement should feel exciting, not complicated.

Another day, another 25% tariff from President Trump. This time on car imports from outside of the US. I am always just keen to see how markets react to the news, as ultimately that's what affects my clients the most. A well spread portfolio is always key to protecting against the most severe drops.
Trump announces 25% tariffs on car imports to US
The US President says the tariffs on cars will come into effect on 2 April and car parts a month later.

The Chancellor announces her Spring statement today. I, like most analysts, are expecting lots of welfare cuts, and I am hoping that there are no surprises in terms of reducing ISA allowances, which had been discussed a few weeks ago.
Spring Statement: Reeves to make further welfare cuts but boost defence
The chancellor will warn of a "changing world" as she sets out the latest plans for the economy.

Stockmarket fluctuations in the last couple of weeks have been really frustrating after a very good spell, but it will settle down, the general forecasts are good, and always important to 'zoom out' and look at the longer term reality.
