Friday mornings are networking mornings for Rory!

Each week, he represents Shipton Wealth at a local business meeting, where everyone gets 45 seconds to introduce their business.

It’s not just business chat - there’s always a bit of fun and plenty of laughter along the way too.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing some of the topics Rory covers in his Friday introductions, alongside the occasional update from the meetings.

Later life planning is one of those subjects that tends to only get discussed once a decision is already needed, often at a difficult time for a family.

Costs vary significantly depending on the type and level of care required, and how these might be funded is rarely straightforward. It can involve savings, property, pensions, or a combination of all three, and the right approach depends entirely on individual circumstances.

Having an early, unhurried conversation about this, well before it becomes urgent, tends to leave families with more options rather than fewer.

Has your family ever discussed how care costs might be met, should the need arise?

It's not a comfortable question, but it's one worth sitting with for a moment: if something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know what to do financially?

Many people have some form of protection in place, but haven't looked at it in years. Life circumstances change; a new mortgage, a growing family, a change in income, and cover that once felt right can quietly fall out of step with reality.

A short review usually covers:

• Whether existing cover still matches your circumstances
• Who is named to benefit, and whether that's still correct
• Any gaps that may have opened up over time

None of this needs to be complicated to put right.

When did you last check that your protection still reflects your life today?

Reaching out to a financial adviser for the first time can feel like a bigger step than it needs to be.

There's no expectation to have everything figured out beforehand, no jargon-heavy checklist, and no pressure to commit to anything on a first conversation.

A first meeting is simply a chance to:
- Talk through your current situation
- Explain what matters most to you
- Understand whether working together makes sense

From there, it's entirely your decision how, or whether, you'd like to move forward.

If you've been putting off that first conversation, we'd be glad to make it a straightforward one.

Planning early, ideally well before a sale is close, tends to give business owners more options, not fewer.

If you're starting to think about an exit, even informally, it's worth having that conversation sooner rather than later.

It's a common misconception: that financial advice is only useful once you already have significant wealth.

In reality, financial planning tends to be most valuable earlier on, when there's more time to make decisions that shape how things unfold.

Some of the areas people come to us with have very little to do with existing wealth, and much more to do with:
- Making sense of a new job or pay rise
- Understanding pension options
- Planning around a growing family
- Simply wanting a clearer picture of where they stand

Financial advice isn't about a minimum amount of money. It's about wanting clarity and confidence in your decisions.

Has this misconception ever put you off getting advice in the past?

There's something about September that makes people want to get organised.

New routines start. Diaries fill up again. For many people, it's the point in the year when things that had quietly been left to one side over the summer start moving back up the list.

We notice this shift every year at Shipton Wealth. Conversations that started in the spring often pick back up again around now.

Does September feel like your natural reset point, or is there a different time of year when you tend to take stock?

Financial planning can sound like a broad, slightly vague term; here's what it actually tends to involve.

At its core, financial planning is about understanding where you are now, where you want to be, and what needs to happen in between.

That might include:
- Understanding your income, savings and outgoings
- Planning for retirement
- Making sure your family is protected
- Thinking about how your wealth is passed on

It isn't a one-off conversation. It's an ongoing relationship that adapts as your life changes.

If you've ever wondered what a financial planning conversation with us would actually look like, we're happy to explain more.

Running a business often means every spare hour goes into the business itself.

Cash flow. Staffing. Growth. Deadlines.

What can get pushed to the bottom of the list is personal financial planning - protection for the business and family if something happens to a key person, or a plan for what happens to the business eventually, whether that's passing it on, selling it, or simply stepping back.

We see this pattern often: business owners who are meticulous about their company's finances but haven't looked at their own for years.

If that sounds familiar, it might be worth setting aside time to talk it through.

Have you reviewed your own financial plans as thoroughly as your business's?
