Quarterly updates sound like a lot of extra work. They're simpler than you might think.
Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, every three months you send HMRC a summary of your income and expenses through your software. That's it.
It isn't a tax return. You don't pay tax each quarter. It just keeps HMRC up to date as the year goes on.
The quarters run to 5 July, 5 October, 5 January and 5 April, and each update is due by the 7th of the following month.
Then, after the tax year ends, you confirm everything in a final declaration – due 31 January, just like your Self Assessment now.
If your records are already in Xero or similar software, most of the work is done for you. If they're in a notebook or a spreadsheet, now is a good time to move.
We can set it all up and send the updates for you.
