September saw oil prices remain elevated, while government bond yields rose across several major economies. Higher energy prices and inflationary pressures have added to concerns around borrowing costs, with central banks taking different approaches to interest rates.

In the UK, attention is turning to the upcoming Budget, while proposed changes to the State Pension triple lock and a new scheme for first-time buyers are also in focus. Elsewhere, political uncertainty in France and rising US Treasury yields have added to pressure in bond markets.

Meanwhile, investment in artificial intelligence continues at pace, with major technology companies competing for investor attention.

With less than four weeks before the chancellor John Healey stands up to give his first Budget, leaks about what might be announced have been few and far between.

The lack of rumours has also led to a notable reduction in speculation, which has been welcomed by both SJP and markets. The panic seen in previous years around potential changes to pensions for example, appears to have been largely muted.

However, in his keynote speech to the Labour Party conference in Birmingham on Tuesday, the prime minister Andy Burnham set out a pledge to offer access to free social care services to everyone in England – on which he intends to lead Labour into the next election.

For many people in their 30s and early 40s, life can feel like a constant balancing act – managing a mortgage, building a career, raising a family and trying to keep up with day to day costs.

With so much focus on the here and now, thinking about long-term protection can easily fall down the priority list. This could leave many financially exposed to unexpected events.

Millennials, those aged around 30 to 45, are at a defining and often stressful stage of life.

Investors saw a perfect storm this week across financial markets. This culminated in US 10-year Treasury yields reaching 5.1%, a level last seen during the global financial crisis in 2007. The 30-year Treasury yield rose even further, exceeding its level in 2004.

Government bond yields are climbing as investors demand even more compensation in response to persistent inflation pressures, a resilient economy as well as high energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Reinforcing higher US inflation pressures was a data release on the economic health and sentiment across the services and manufacturing sectors. This showed US business activity during September accelerated to its fastest rate in over five years. While signs of a booming economy would normally be considered as positive for markets, difficulties in sourcing suitable staff and order backlogs are adding to fears of higher pressure on selling prices and therefore inflation in the months to come. This strength in the economy also suggests it is strong enough to absorb another rate hike. It also feeds into the higher for longer narrative regarding interest rates, pushing bond prices, shares and the gold price lower.

When an elderly relative needs long-term care, it can be a difficult and stressful time for all concerned.

And when you’re not sure how that care is going to be paid for, or how it might affect the family finances, it’s likely to add to the burden on everyone’s shoulders.

This was the situation that Connor* and his mother Sarah* found themselves in. Sarah was 95 at the time, and they had come to the conclusion that she was no longer coping with living on her own at home.

One but not done? First US rate hike in three years

It was a busy week for central bank watchers. First up was the US Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which on Wednesday voted unanimously to raise US interest rates by 0.25%. This was the first Fed hike in three years. Following this move, shares and bonds rose as investors reacted positively to the implicit message that under new chair Kevin Warsh, the Fed’s priority remains targeting inflation.

Appointed by President Trump, Warsh took over in May 2026. Trump wanted a Fed chair who he hoped would be more amenable to lower interest rates than Warsh’s predecessor, Jerome Powell. Warsh voting for a rate hike demonstrated to financial markets he is not just a 'Trump proxy'.
