💚 World Mental Health Day 2026 💚

Today is a reminder that mental health matters, not just today, but every day.

With so much of our time spent at work, it’s important to create an environment where people feel supported, listened to and comfortable speaking up when they’re struggling.

Sometimes the smallest things can make a difference - checking in with a colleague, taking a proper break, getting outside for some fresh air, or simply asking, “How are you?” and really listening to the answer.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s keep the conversation going and remember to look after ourselves and each other. 💚

If you run a limited company, taking money out isn't quite as simple as transferring whatever you need from the business bank account.

There are several different ways you can take money from your company, and each has different tax and reporting implications.

Here are some of the most common:

🔹 Salary
You can pay yourself a salary through payroll. This can be a tax-efficient way of taking money from your company, depending on your circumstances.

🔹 Dividends
Dividends are paid from your company's available profits after Corporation Tax. They can be a tax-efficient way to extract profits, but there are rules around when and how they can be paid.

🔹 Director's loan account
Money can sometimes be taken from the company as a director's loan, but this needs to be recorded correctly and there can be tax implications if the balance isn't repaid.

🔹 Business expenses
If you've personally paid for legitimate business expenses, the company can reimburse you. This isn't really "income" - it's simply the company paying you back for costs you've incurred on its behalf.

🔹 Pension contributions
Your company can potentially make contributions directly into your pension. This can be a tax-efficient way of extracting value from the company while also planning for the future.

The most tax-efficient approach will depend on your circumstances, so it's worth planning how you extract profits rather than simply taking money as and when you need it.

Not sure which options are right for you? That's where we can help.

📩 Get in touch with Northgate Accounting to discuss your options.

Did you know… the word “salary” is linked to the Latin word for salt?

Salt was incredibly valuable in ancient times, and the Latin word "salarium" is where our modern word “salary” eventually came from.

So, technically, when payday rolls around… you’re earning your salt!
