🐰 “That’s how I do it” isn’t quite the same as “That’s our agreed process.”

When payroll depends on individual habits, hidden spreadsheets and verbal instructions, consistency becomes difficult—and holiday cover becomes a treasure hunt. 🔎

Standardising payroll operations means creating shared foundations while allowing for legitimate differences between clients, teams and pay cycles.

Our latest DuraSuite guide explores how to:

✅ Map what actually happens and identify recurring rework.
✅ Define who prepares, checks, approves and resolves issues.
✅ Document procedures, controls and hand-offs.
✅ Give justified variations a clear owner and approval route.
✅ Start with one process, test it and refine before expanding.

A useful question for your next payroll cycle:

Could someone else follow the process, find the evidence and understand the decisions without relying on one person’s memory?

DuraSuite helps payroll bureaux and internal teams connect processes, responsibilities, controls and knowledge—building clarity that supports everyday delivery and continuity.

Where does your team lose the most time: chasing inputs, clarifying ownership or handling exceptions?

WOW.

We are in Your Business with James Caan, Autumn 2026, pages 172–173.

This is the magazine you pick up in the supermarket, the newsagent, a GP or hospital waiting room, and in WeWork and Regus buildings.

Not a niche trade title that only other founders see. Real people, in real waiting rooms, reading it over a coffee.

CBE built his name backing businesses that actually get built. Sitting in that issue, on those pages, is a moment we will not pretend is ordinary. If you see it, photograph the spread and tag us. Pages 172–173.

📚 Your HR policies say the right things. What happens in practice?

A policy can set expectations. But who turns those expectations into action? Who checks consistency? And where is the evidence?

That’s where a connected HR compliance ecosystem matters. 🔗

✅ Rules: Clear, current policies people understand.
✅ Processes: Practical steps that guide everyday decisions.
✅ Ownership: Named responsibilities for action, approval and escalation.
✅ Oversight: Checks and records that show whether it’s working.

When these connections are missing, teams can work hard while gaps go unnoticed.

I built DuraSuite to help businesses connect policy, process, risk and accountability—giving people clearer guidance and leaders greater visibility.

Because the real test is how your policies shape decisions on a busy Tuesday.

It would be fair to say I’ve loved hats since I was a wee child. 🎩

Yes, they make a statement, and I love to be bold in all that I do. But they’re also symbolic: I have always worn so many hats in life, and I always will.

In fact, don’t we all?

Here are some of mine and the transferable skills each one helps me develop:

💼 Payroll leader — leadership, accuracy, accountability and navigating complexity.
💻 SaaS developer — logical thinking, innovation and translating real needs into practical solutions.
❤️ Wife — partnership, communication, compromise and commitment.
🤝 Friend — listening, empathy, trust and showing up.
🌷 Daughter — care, patience and understanding different perspectives.
🎗️ Charity fundraiser — relationship building, persuasion and mobilising people around a purpose.
🧹 Cleaner — organisation, attention to detail and the satisfaction of bringing order to chaos!
📋 Project manager — planning, prioritisation, coordination and keeping things moving.
⚙️ HR tech developer — understanding people, designing processes and making complicated things easier.
🎨 Graphic designer — creativity, visual communication and seeing things through someone else’s eyes.
🧮 Tax accountant — analysis, sound judgement and explaining complex information clearly.
🔍 Problem solver — curiosity, resourcefulness and finding the cause behind the symptoms.
🎤 Singer — confidence, preparation and connecting with an audience.
🏃‍♀️ Runner — perseverance, pacing and working towards long-term goals.
💃 Dancer — coordination, adaptability and expressing myself.
🏋️‍♀️ Powerlifter — discipline, focus and building strength through consistent effort.
🍳 Cook — preparation, timing and improvising when the ingredients don’t quite match the plan!
🔨 DIY enthusiast — practical thinking, troubleshooting and learning by doing.
✍️ Author — storytelling, clarity and turning ideas into something others can connect with.

What else? I’m sure there’s another hat hiding somewhere… 🤨😂

We often overlook how much our different roles teach us—and how those skills transfer into our careers, businesses, relationships and everyday challenges.

Organising a fundraiser? That’s project management.
Training for a race? That’s planning and perseverance.
Listening to a friend? That’s empathy and communication.

Give yourself credit for what you know, what you can do and the effort it took to get there.

Keep practising, keep learning and keep adding to your miraculous Mary Poppins bag of skills. There’s always room for one more. 👜✨

Which hat has taught you a skill you use somewhere completely different?

I’ve loved hats since I was a wee child… and I’ve always worn plenty of them! 🎩😂

Bold? Yes. But also symbolic of the many roles we all juggle:

💼 Payroll leader & tax accountant — accuracy and judgement
💻 SaaS & HR tech developer — innovation and problem solving
❤️ Wife, friend & daughter — empathy and communication
🎗️ Fundraiser & project manager — organisation and persuasion
🎨 Designer & author — creativity and storytelling
🏃‍♀️ Runner & powerlifter — discipline and resilience
🎤 Singer & dancer — confidence and expression
🍳 Cook, cleaner & DIY enthusiast — planning and resourcefulness

We develop skills everywhere—not just at work.

Give yourself credit for what you’ve learned and the effort it took. Keep adding to your Mary Poppins bag of skills… there’s always room for more! 👜✨
