πŸ“… The Self Assessment date nobody talks about: 30 December.

Everyone knows about 31 January. But if you’re employed (or get a pension) AND you have a bit of extra income, like rent from a property, a side business or some self-employed work, there’s an earlier date worth knowing.

File your 2025/26 return online by 30 December 2026 and, if you owe less than Β£3,000, HMRC can usually collect it through your tax code instead. That means:

βœ… No lump sum to find in January
βœ… The tax spread across your pay from next April
βœ… One less thing hanging over Christmas

There are conditions, so it’s worth checking it applies to you. But for a lot of employed landlords and side-hustlers in County Durham, it’s the easiest win going.

Want us to file yours in time? Fixed fee, no fuss.

⚑ Dreading the January tax bill already?

For a lot of tradespeople in County Durham, January means a knot in the stomach and no real idea what's coming. It doesn't need to.

A proper review before the year end tells you exactly what you'll owe, months in advance, and often turns up allowances on tools, vans and kit that have never been claimed.

Free tax review. No obligation. No surprises in January.

πŸ—οΈ The Budget is five days away. If you're in construction or trades in County Durham β€” here's what's worth doing before Wednesday.

We work with a lot of builders, electricians, groundworkers and contractors along the A1 corridor and across County Durham. And the same question keeps coming up this week: should I be doing anything before 28 October?

Honestly β€” yes. Specifically:

πŸ”΅ If you're thinking about buying a van, plant or equipment β€” there may be a case for doing it before the Budget if Annual Investment Allowance rules change. Talk to us.

πŸ”΅ If you're a sole trader earning over Β£50,000 β€” MTD quarterly deadline is 7 November. You need to be set up now.

πŸ”΅ If you work under CIS β€” we can tell you exactly what deductions have been made and whether you're owed a refund. Many Durham subbies are.

πŸ”΅ If you're thinking about going limited β€” timing matters. Pre and post-Budget could change the calculation.

We're offering a free 30-minute pre-Budget conversation to any County Durham tradesperson who calls this week. No sales pitch. Just useful advice.

πŸͺ‘ Honest question for County Durham business owners: when did your accountant last actually call you?

Not to chase paperwork. Not to ask for a signature. Just called to say β€” 'I've been looking at your numbers and I think there's an opportunity here.'

If the answer is never β€” or you genuinely can't remember β€” that's worth thinking about.

A good accountant is proactive. They know your numbers well enough to spot things before you do. They understand your industry. They explain things clearly. And they feel like they're on your side, not just processing your year-end.

Switching sounds like hard work. We've made it genuinely simple:

βœ… We contact your previous accountant
βœ… We notify HMRC of the change
βœ… We get access to your records
βœ… We do a full briefing with you
βœ… Usually completed within one week

If you're not getting the service you deserve, we'd love to have a no-obligation conversation. We're based in Chester-le-Street and serve businesses across County Durham.

Running a business comes with plenty to think about, and it’s easy for your finances to slip down the priority list. But ignoring the numbers could lead to some frightening surprises further down the line. 😱

From keeping your bookkeeping up to date and monitoring cash flow, to planning for your tax bill, reviewing your business expenses and preparing for future growth, staying financially organised can make a huge difference.

A little planning now could help you avoid unnecessary stress later and leave you with more time to focus on what really matters: running and growing your business. πŸ“ˆ

So this October, keep the scares where they belong and make sure your business finances are in good shape. πŸŽƒ

Not sure where to start? Avery Martin is here to help you take the fear out of your business finances. πŸ‘‹

πŸ“‹ HMRC has quietly updated its guidance on interest deductions β€” and if you run an unincorporated business, it could affect you.

This one hasn't had much press coverage but it matters.

HMRC has revised its Business Income Manual on the deductibility of interest for sole traders and partnerships. The changes signal that HMRC may increasingly look to restrict interest relief where loans aren't clearly and directly connected to the business.

In plain English: if you've borrowed money β€” personally or through the business β€” and you've been claiming interest as a business expense, it's worth checking that the basis for that claim is solid.

This affects:
β†’ Sole traders with business loans or overdrafts
β†’ Landlords with property finance
β†’ Partnerships with borrowings
β†’ Anyone who has used personal borrowing partly for business purposes

We're reviewing this for all our affected clients as part of our year-end work. If you're not our client yet and you want a second opinion on your interest claims, we're happy to take a look as part of a free tax review.

Seeing money sitting in your business bank account can feel like a sign that things are going well, but it doesn’t necessarily tell you how profitable your business really is.

Your bank balance can be affected by things like:

β€’ Money you’ve borrowed
β€’ Outstanding invoices
β€’ Tax and VAT liabilities
β€’ Upcoming bills and expenses
β€’ Drawings or money taken from the business

Understanding your actual profit and loss gives you a much clearer picture of your business’s financial health β€” and helps you make better decisions about growth, spending and your future.

Don’t just look at what’s in the bank. Know what your numbers are really telling you. πŸ“Š

⚠️ If your income from self-employment or property is over Β£50,000 β€” this is urgent.

The second MTD quarterly update deadline is Saturday 7 November 2026. Updates are cumulative, so this one covers the period 6 April to 5 October 2026.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has been mandatory since April for anyone earning above that threshold. And HMRC has now confirmed they are actively signing up people who haven't registered β€” whether they're ready or not.

If you're in scope and haven't yet:
βœ… Registered for MTD
βœ… Connected compatible software
βœ… Made your first quarterly submission

…you need to act now. The 7 November deadline is 18 days away.

The good news: HMRC has confirmed no penalty points for late submissions in the first year. But you still need to be set up and submitting β€” and if HMRC registers you automatically, you'll need software in place fast.

We get businesses MTD-ready quickly. Fixed fee. Fully managed. We handle everything.

Call us today β€” Chester-le-Street based, serving the whole of County Durham and beyond.
