💚 A lovely day at the AAT AGM and Member Advisory Council meeting!

It was wonderful to see Lucy Cohen pass the President’s baton to Craig Dyer and Libby Walklett step into her new role as Vice President. So lovely to see my fellow AAT Member Advisory Council members taking on these roles!

The afternoon was spent at our Member Advisory Council meeting, catching up with fellow members, sharing ideas and having some really valuable discussions.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to different perspectives, getting involved and sharing my own experiences.

I feel very fortunate to be part of a council where we can learn from one another and help make a positive difference for AAT members.

A big thank you to AAT for bringing us together. A lovely day of learning, connecting and plenty of laughter! 💚

What a truly memorable two days in Bristol! 💚

A huge thank you to AAT for organising such a fantastic Branch Day and bringing us all together.

It was lovely catching up with familiar faces, meeting new people, sharing ideas and learning from one another.

There were so many valuable conversations, lots of laughter and plenty of wonderful memories made along the way!

It really reminded me how special the AAT community is and how much we can achieve when we come together to support and inspire one another.

Thank you to everyone who made these two days so enjoyable. I came away feeling inspired, grateful and proud to be part of such a lovely community. ❤️

What a lovely evening in Bristol at the AAT Branch Day event! 💚

It has been wonderful catching up with familiar faces, meeting new people and celebrating the dedication of AAT branch volunteers who give up their time to support others.

A particularly lovely moment was seeing our AAT Derby networking walk featured on the big screen and hearing Lucy Cohen mention us during her presentation! It was so nice to see our little initiative being recognised. 😊

Being involved with AAT has given me so many opportunities to meet inspiring people, share experiences and give something back to the accountancy community.

For me, networking is about building genuine relationships, supporting one another and making everyone feel welcome.

Looking forward to another day of learning, sharing ideas and bringing some inspiration back to Derby!

Thank you to everyone at AAT for bringing us all together. 💚

The best time to ask your accountant is before you make the decision

Thinking about investing in equipment?

Taking someone on?

Changing your prices?

Planning a big purchase?

Those are conversations I want my clients to have with me before they make the decision.

I see my role as more than preparing accounts at year end. I am also there to help clients understand their numbers and make better business decisions throughout the year.

Sometimes a short conversation at the right time can save a lot of worry later.

If this kind of ongoing support would help you, I am happy to chat.

Your price needs to cover more than your creative time

If you are a photographer, designer, artist or another creative, the customer often sees the finished work.

You know how much happens behind the scenes.

Planning. Emails. Editing. Materials. Software. Marketing. Admin.

That time has value too.

When you price your work, make sure you are pricing the whole job, not just the part your customer sees.

Your bookkeeping system should work with your brain

There is no prize for having the most complicated bookkeeping system.

If you are neurodivergent, a simple routine that you actually follow is far more useful than a perfect system you avoid.

Photograph receipts as you go.

Choose one regular time to check your records.

Keep the number of steps small.

Good bookkeeping should make running your business feel easier, not give you another thing to dread.

Since September, HMRC has started automatically signing up people who should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but have not signed themselves up.

This applies if your qualifying self-employment and property income was over £50,000 for 2024/25 and you are not exempt. HMRC says it will contact you after it has signed you up.

If your income was over £30,000 in 2025/26, you will come into the system from April 2027.

My advice is simple: do not wait for a letter to start thinking about it.

Getting your records and software organised early will make the change much easier.

A full diary can feel like success.

But if you are working constantly and there is very little left after costs, it is worth looking deeper.

Which clients or services make you the best return?

Which take far more time than you expected?

Sometimes the next stage of growth is not doing more. It is choosing the right work.

Your CIC has secured funding. What happens next?

Getting funding can feel like the hard part.

But good financial management becomes even more important after the money arrives.

Having served on voluntary-sector boards for over 15 years, I know that a grant can bring opportunities, but it can also bring responsibilities.

I would want a board to understand:

What can the funding actually be spent on?

When will the money be received?

How long does it need to last?

What happens when the funding ends?

Will the project create costs that continue afterwards?

What information will the funder expect you to report?

Thinking about these questions early helps protect both the funding and the organisation.

It also means the board can plan for sustainability rather than reaching the end of a grant and suddenly asking, what happens now?

Funding can help you deliver your purpose. Good financial planning helps you protect it.

Seeing a healthy bank balance can feel reassuring.

But the bank balance does not tell you how much money is actually available.

Some of it may need to pay your tax.

Some may be needed for upcoming bills.

You might have payroll or suppliers to pay.

And perhaps you have an investment planned for the business.

This is why I like clients to look ahead, not just at today’s bank balance.

If you know what is coming in and what needs to go out, you can make much better decisions about what you can safely spend or take from the business.

It also avoids that horrible feeling when a tax bill arrives and the money has already been spent.

Knowing what your money needs to do gives you much more control over your business.
