Received an HMRC penalty?

Do not assume you simply have to accept it.

If something outside your control genuinely stopped you from meeting the deadline, you may have grounds to appeal.

But HMRC will usually want more than “something went wrong”.

You need to be able to explain what happened, when it happened, how it prevented you from complying and what you did once the problem was resolved.
