🧑‍🍳😪if your accountant is currently waiting for something from you… consider this your reminder 👀 Your deadline is NOT the day to send everything.

We know how easy it is for accounting admin to slip down the list when you’re busy actually running the business - clients, staff, emails, jobs… there’s always something else demanding your attention.

But accounting is a two-way business relationship…A good accountant will stay in touch with you throughout the year - BUT we need the same from you.

When information like bank statements, invoices or answers to our questions arrives at the last minute, there’s less time to check everything properly, find what’s missing or deal with anything unexpected.

And accountancy is a business too - we have other clients, other deadlines and work already scheduled in. Last-minute work may need to fit around that.
So send documents as soon as you can when they’re requested, reply when something needs clarifying, and keep us updated if something changes.

We can only do the work properly if we have the information we need from you 🧡

The businesses in the strongest position aren’t always the ones that spend the least. They’re the ones that know what is worth spending on

Here are 5 we think are often worth considering:

1. Equipment ⚒️
Better tools, machinery or technology can increase what the business is actually capable of doing. Qualifying equipment may also receive tax relief, depending on the business and how it’s accounted for.

2. Training & skills 📚
The right training can improve how you sell, manage, market or deliver your service. Training that supports your existing business may also qualify as a business expense.

3. Marketing you can measure 💻
A website, advertising or good content shouldn’t just look nice. The important question is: is it generating enquiries, customers or sales? If it is, cutting it simply because it costs money can be false economy.

4. Professional help 👩‍🏫
We would much rather see a business owner ask for help before something becomes a problem. An accountant, solicitor, HR professional or other specialist can often prevent a relatively small issue becoming an expensive one.

5. Pension contributions 💰
Particularly worth looking at for limited company owners. Company pension contributions can have tax advantages where the relevant conditions are met. For sole traders, the tax treatment is different.

🚨 And one rule we’d give any business owner:
Never spend even £1 just because somebody told you it’s “tax deductible”.
You’re still spending the money.
The better question is: what is this ÂŁ1 going to do for the business?
If it helps you make more, save time, grow capacity or avoid a much larger cost later, then it may be money well spent.

What have you been putting off because it feels like an expense?

Taking on your first business premises is exciting… but it can also feel like the costs start piling up very quickly, business rates being one of them.

A few things you can do:

👉 Look up the rateable value yourself. You can search the property on GOV.UK before you commit. If you’re still unsure what this is, we’ve explained it in a previous reel, pinned at the top of our page

👉 Check what relief you’re entitled to with the local council. They’re the ones who issue the Business Rates bill and deal with reliefs

👉If the rateable value looks wrong, you don’t necessarily have to accept it. You can check how the VOA arrived at the figure, compare it with similar properties and, if appropriate, challenge the valuation

Basically: don’t leave Business Rates until after you’ve signed the lease.

A few checks beforehand can make a real difference to what that space actually costs your business.

Next in the series: what happens to Small Business Rate Relief when you take on a second property? 👀

27/08/2026

Most commercial properties in England are subject to Business Rates, usually billed separately by your local council. And that bill isn’t simply based on the rent you’re paying…

Each property has a rateable value, set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). Current values came into effect on 1 April 2026 and are based on what the property could have rented for on the open market on 1 April 2024.

Your council uses that value, the relevant Business Rates multiplier and any reliefs you qualify for to work out what you pay. And those reliefs can make a big difference…

Some qualifying businesses can have their Business Rates bill reduced all the way to £0 👀

So before committing to a shop, salon, studio, workshop or office, check:

• the property’s rateable value
• what the Business Rates bill could be
• whether you could qualify for relief

Two premises with similar rent won’t necessarily cost your business the same overall.

Next: who can qualify for Small Business Rate Relief and when that bill can actually be £0. Follow for Part 2 😊

Student loan deductions are one of those payroll responsibilities that can easily catch employers out… You don’t need to investigate who has a loan. But once you’re told deductions apply, you need to make sure the correct plan is set up and the right amount is taken through payroll.

Save this for later in case you forget! And if you’re ever unsure what should be deducted, just ask. We’re happy to chat 😉
