If a client sued your business tomorrow, would your house be safe?

For sole traders, the honest answer is no. There's no legal separation between you and the business, so your home and savings are exposed if something goes wrong.

A limited company is a separate legal entity, which keeps personal assets protected in most cases.

That's one reason to think about incorporating. Since April 2026, there's another.

Since April 2026, sole traders with income over £50,000 have had to send updates to HMRC quarterly, rather than once a year. Limited companies don't have to do this, so staying a sole trader no longer means less paperwork.

Running a limited company also involves less admin than many people expect. With an accountant looking after the yearly filings for you, there's very little you need to do yourself.

That said, the right choice still depends on your profits, your plans and your personal circumstances.

If you'd like to talk about what that looks like for your own business, drop us an email and we'll help you.

Most sole traders assume a limited company will save them tax.

At £60,000 profit, the numbers say otherwise.

A sole trader would pay around £13,889 in tax. A limited company would pay around £14,278, which is £389 more.

Even at £125,000 profit, the limited company can still come out with the bigger bill, unless there's scope to pay a partner a wage.

So if tax isn't the main reason to incorporate, what is?

Our latest guide looks at the things that often matter more:

- Liability - how much of your personal life is tied to the business

- Making Tax Digital - quarterly reporting for sole traders has narrowed the admin gap

- Growth and ownership - bringing in shareholders, investment or a future sale

- Credibility - some larger clients won't work with sole traders at all

Every situation is different, but the guide is a helpful place to start if the question has been on your mind for a while.

Kind words like these mean a lot to the whole team.

Running a small business means juggling plenty at once, and good advice shouldn't stop at the tax return. We're always happy to help clients look at the bigger picture, whether that's their finances, their tax position or plans for the years ahead.

Thank you for taking the time to share this - it's much appreciated.
If you'd like an accountant who's there when you need them, we'd be happy to hear from you.

Before choosing an accountant on price, ask them one question. When did they last save a client money that the client hadn't asked about?

At JVCA, we work hard to make sure our clients get real value for their money. And as the old saying goes, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

So if you're weighing up fees, it's worth thinking about what you're actually paying for:

- A service that simply process tax returns
- A professional who knows your situation inside out.

Tax returns do matter, of course. Staying compliant matters too. But the value of a good accountant goes beyond that.

It's hard to put a price on the trust you place in your accountant, and the trust they earn by always having your best interests at heart.

It's how a 20-minute phone call recently saved one of our clients £2,100 (shared in yesterday's post). That's what holistic accounting looks like in practice.

Our aim is to be an accountant you can depend on, and worth every penny.

A 20-minute phone call recently saved one of our clients £2,100.

The client had phoned Jonathan with a couple of everyday questions. There was nothing unusual about them. But while they were chatting, Jonathan spotted a tax saving the client hadn't thought to ask about.

It wasn't anything extraordinary. It came from knowing the client well - their business, their family and what they're planning over the next few years. With that full picture, there's a much better chance of finding tax that can be saved or reclaimed.

If Jonathan had simply answered the questions and put the phone down, the client would have been perfectly happy! Yet some of the most useful advice comes from the questions you didn't know to ask.

This is what we mean by holistic accounting. We look at you as a director, a business owner and the family behind the business, because it all connects.

Moments like this are why we love what we do at JVCA.

If you'd like an accountant who picks up the phone and looks at the bigger picture, we'd be happy to talk.

Are you MTD compliant? Double-check these 3 things 👇

Having the software and logging everything digitally doesn't automatically mean you’re MTD compliant.

There’s no harm in just quickly checking these small 3 things that are often missed:

1. Is your software HMRC-recognised - HMRC keeps a list of software that's been through their recognition process, so have a quick look to confirm yours is on it.

2. Is it properly connected - Your software needs to be linked to HMRC and set up to submit your returns directly, rather than just recording your figures for you.

3. Are your digital records unbroken - This is the one that's easiest to overlook. Your figures need to flow digitally from the moment they're entered right through to submission. Copying totals into a spreadsheet by hand along the way can break the chain, even when everything else looks fine.

Once you know what to look for, it’s not hard to spot. It's just not always made very clear.

If you'd like a hand checking your MTD setup ticks all three boxes, we'd be happy to have a look for you. Get in touch via email at [email protected].

HMRC can check your business records at any time, and they do exactly that with a set number of businesses every year. So it's less a case of if, and more a case of when it might be your turn.

As long as your record keeping is in good shape, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Here are the things that will work in your favour:

- Keep a full VAT invoice for anything £250 or over

- For smaller purchases, a receipt showing the VAT number and VAT amount will suffice

- Keep copies of your bank statements, as proof of payment and receipt

- Keep everything digital through software that connects to HMRC. Spreadsheets alone no longer meet the Making Tax Digital rules

So, how long do you need to keep them for?

- For VAT and Corporation Tax, it's at least 6 years

- For Income Tax it’s 5 years from the 31 January after the tax year it relates to

If you're ever unsure, it's safer to keep things for longer rather than shorter.
And this all applies even if you're not VAT registered. You can't reclaim the VAT, but you still need proof that an expense was genuinely for the business.

Good record keeping is about staying compliant and equally about being able to show your position quickly and easily if HMRC ever does ask.

If your books feel like a bit of a mess, or you'd rather someone else handle them, we'd be happy to help. Just drop us an email!
