Today is World Mental Health Day πŸ’š

Running a business can be all-consuming - and money worries are one of the heaviest things owners carry, often quietly.

The late-night "have I got enough put aside?" thoughts are more common than anyone lets on.

You don't have to have it all figured out on your own.

Sometimes simply having someone in your corner who understands the numbers is enough to lift a surprising amount of weight off your shoulders.

Be kind to yourself today - and do check in on the business owners in your life.

They'll often say "I'm fine" long before they actually are. πŸ’š

πŸ‘€ Worth two minutes of your time this week.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month - a good reminder that scammers love tax season. Around now, fake "HMRC" texts, emails and calls tend to ramp up.

A few things worth remembering:
β€’ HMRC will never text or email you a link to claim a refund
β€’ They'll never ask for your bank or card details out of the blue
β€’ They'll never threaten you with immediate arrest to pressure a payment

If something feels off, it usually is - don't click and check with us or HMRC directly first. If you're ever unsure whether a message is genuine, take a screen shot and send it to us.

Ever had one of these land in your inbox? Share it below so others know what to watch for πŸ‘‡

πŸ“… Key dates for your October diary.

A few things worth having on your radar this month:

- 5 October - Deadline to register for Self Assessment if you became self-employed during the 2025/26 tax year.

- 28 October - Budget Day. The Chancellor delivers the 2026 Autumn Budget to the House of Commons. We'll break down anything that matters for small businesses afterwards.

- 31 October - Deadline to submit paper tax returns (and remember, filing online gives you until 31 January).

Consider this your friendly heads-up so nothing sneaks up on you - keeping track of these is exactly what we're here for.

Which of these is on your list this month? πŸ‘‡

And just like that - three-quarters of the year, done βœ…

Before the Q4 sprint kicks in, it's worth a quick pause. No spreadsheet or strategy day needed - just a moment to ask: what's one thing that's gone well for your business this year?

Big or small, we'd love to hear it - celebrating the wins matters just as much as chasing the next one πŸ‘‡

And if part of you is thinking "I'd love to head into Q4 with a clearer financial picture," that's exactly where we come in.

A quick heads-up that could save someone a headache πŸ“Œ

If you started working for yourself during the last tax year (6 April 2025 – 5 April 2026), you need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC by 5 October - which is just around the corner.

It's an easy one to miss, especially in your first year self-employed when tax isn't exactly front of mind. Registering on time keeps things simple and avoids unnecessary penalties later.

Not sure whether it applies to you, or how to go about it? That's exactly the kind of thing we help with - a quick chat now can save a lot of stress later.

Know someone who went self-employed this year? Give them a nudge and tag them below πŸ‘‡ (future them will say thanks.)

Every business owner is a little bit of both… but which one are you most of the time? πŸ€”

πŸ…°οΈ The spreadsheet lives on your desktop, colour-coded, and you check it more than you'd admit.

πŸ…±οΈ You know roughly where things stand, and "roughly" has served you fine so far.

There's no wrong answer here - plenty of great businesses run on gut feel, and plenty of tidy spreadsheets hide a messy quarter.

So be honest… A or B? πŸ‘‡

Two truths and a lie: tax edition πŸ•΅οΈ

One of these we completely made up. Can you spot the odd one out?

1️⃣ You can claim tax relief on a staff Christmas party (up to a set amount per head).

2️⃣ You can deduct your daily coffee-run as a business expense.

3️⃣ Some businesses can claim tax relief for a cat kept on the premises.

One of these isn't true… but you might be surprised which. Drop your guess below and we'll reveal the answer πŸ‘‡

It's National Payroll Week! πŸŽ‰

Payroll is one of those things nobody notices when it's right - and everybody notices the second it's wrong. Behind every "paid correctly, on time, every time" is a lot of careful, precise work most people never see.

This week (7–11 Sept) is all about the people who make that happen - and we're lucky to have a brilliant payroll specialist (recently qualified in Payroll Techniques).

So here's your chance: is there anything about payroll you've always wondered but never asked? Pop your questions below and we'll answer them πŸ‘‡
