🔸Monday Myth-Busting - Business expenses

"I paid for it on my personal card, so it doesn't count as a business expense." 💳

Actually - it's about what the purchase was for, not which card paid for it. If it's a genuine business cost, it's still claimable even if it went through a personal account.

The card is just plumbing; what matters is the receipt and the purpose.

This one trips people up constantly, especially in the early days before separate accounts are set up.

🔸Monday Myth-Busting - Cash payments

"I heard cash payments don't need to be declared."

They absolutely do.

Cash income is treated exactly the same as any other income - the only difference is it's on you to keep a clear record of it, since there's no bank statement doing it for you.

🔸Monday Myth-Busting - Trading Allowance

"I don't need to declare it if it's under the trading allowance."

Half true, half risky. The £1,000 trading allowance means you don't need to tell HMRC about small amounts of side income under that threshold - but if you go over it, even by a small amount, you need to declare the whole lot, not just the excess.

A lot of side-hustlers get caught out by this exact detail.

What are "Payments on Account"?

If you're self-employed or a company director and your tax bill was over £1,000 last year, HMRC doesn't just ask for that - they also ask you to pay towards next year's bill in advance, in two chunks:
🔶 31 January
🔶 31 July
Each one is 50% of last year's bill.

Quick example: Last year's tax bill was £6,000? You'd pay £3,000 in January and £3,000 in July towards this year - then once we know your actual figure, you either get a top-up bill or a refund.

It catches a lot of people out the first time round - but once you know it's coming, it's easy to plan for.
