I’ve noticed something quite satisfying in the accounts recently… a number of my clients are making their final Bounce Back Loan payments. 🙌

It actually made me think back to just how tough that period was for so many small businesses.

At the time, nobody really knew what was going to happen. Income disappeared overnight for some, businesses had to close their doors and there was a huge amount of uncertainty about whether they would even survive.

For many, those Bounce Back Loans were exactly that – something to help them keep going.

Fast forward a few years and I’m now seeing those loan balances finally hit £0. 🎉

And I think that’s worth acknowledging.

These businesses didn’t just survive that incredibly difficult period. They’ve carried on trading, adapted, dealt with rising costs and plenty of other challenges along the way – and they’re still here.

I’ve worked with many of them throughout the whole journey, so seeing that final payment go out feels like a little milestone.

If you’ve just made yours – give yourself a pat on the back. You’ve come a long way! 👏

Yesterday I paid £10 to have my car washed and it got me thinking about outsourcing!

I drive a big 4x4 and, being only 5’2”, washing it properly myself is a bit of a challenge 😂

For £10, I sat in the car for 10–15 minutes catching up on emails while someone else did a much better job than I would have done.

If I’d washed it myself, by the time I’d got everything out, washed it, dried it and put everything away again, I’d easily have lost an hour of my day.

And it made me think… sometimes paying someone else to do something isn’t really a cost – it’s buying your time back.

I see exactly the same thing with bookkeeping.

I’ve had lots of new clients tell me they’ve been spending hours trying to keep on top of their books themselves. Something that might take them half a day can often take me a fraction of the time because it’s what I do every day.

Meanwhile, those are hours they could have spent doing the work they actually get paid for – often earning far more than they’re paying me to do the bookkeeping!

We can’t (and don’t need to!) do everything ourselves.

Sometimes it makes much more sense to pay someone who can do it quicker and better… which in my case yesterday was definitely washing the roof of my car! 😂

A day out of the office today for me and Josh at Accountex!

Lots to take away from the day, but two areas in particular really caught my attention.

🎾 Fractional FD work – this is an area I’m really keen to grow within My Clear Accounts. It was great to pick up some ideas around how to position this service, find the right businesses that would benefit from it and, most importantly, how to demonstrate the value that having regular FD-level input can bring to a business.

🎾 AI in accountancy – not about replacing the accountant (you’re not getting rid of me that easily! 😂), but how I can use it to work smarter, improve processes and free up more of my time to actually spend helping clients.

And it was lovely having Josh there with me too. At 17 and studying Accounting, I’m not sure many teenagers would choose an accountancy exhibition for a day out… but he seemed to enjoy it! 😂

Lots of ideas to bring back to My Clear Accounts – now I just need the time to put them all into practice!

I’ve been a little quiet on here again recently, but this week finally feels like we’re properly back into a routine!

First, a little proud mum update… Ben got Head Pupil! 🎉

After watching his big brother hold the same position a few years ago, it was something he really wanted. We kept telling him not to compare himself and that just having the confidence to put himself forward was an achievement in itself – but he did it! We’re absolutely delighted for him. ❤️

On the work front, I’ve also been speaking to a potential new client about providing Virtual/Fractional FD support – an area I’m really keen to do more of.

I love the compliance side of accountancy, but I particularly enjoy getting more involved in a business – understanding what’s happening behind the numbers, looking at cash flow, management information and helping business owners actually use their figures to make decisions rather than simply producing accounts after the event.

It’s definitely an area I’d like to grow within My Clear Accounts.

And tomorrow I’m off to Accountex – a chance to get out of the office, see what’s new in the accountancy world and hopefully pick up a few ideas along the way!

School routines back, everyone where they’re supposed to be and finally feeling a little more organised again. 😄

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately… mainly because life has been rather full!

I came back from holiday straight into the usual juggle of emails, payrolls and getting back up to speed… then somehow decided that decorating my son’s bedroom over the Bank Holiday weekend was a good idea 🤦‍♀️😂

Add in my husband disappearing off to Singapore and Japan with work for the week, and my body clock apparently deciding it should join him — he’s getting up as I’m going to bed most nights! 😴

But this week finally feels like the start of getting back into a routine.

My youngest went back to school yesterday and his Head Pupil video was shown across the school. He came home announcing that he’s “basically a celebrity now” 😂

His interview was today and now comes the waiting! Of course I’d be delighted if we ended up with a second Head Pupil in the family, but regardless of the outcome, seeing how much his confidence has grown through the process has made me incredibly proud.

Then next week my eldest heads back to college too.

So perhaps next week I might finally remember what a normal working week looks like… although I’m making no promises! 😂

I’m back! ☀️

After a fantastic two-week break in 🇮🇹 , I’m back at my desk today attempting to work my way through the emails!

I’m not quite fully operational just yet, as unfortunately I have a funeral to attend tomorrow, but from Wednesday it will be business as usual at My Clear Accounts.

And I couldn’t come back without sharing a few videos from our holiday… 😂

The things my boys make me do!

Canyoning and rafting was VERY much outside my comfort zone. I was absolutely petrified at times, but somehow they persuaded me to keep going!

So here’s the evidence – three little clips of me questioning my life choices while the boys were probably wondering what all the fuss was about! 😂

As they get older, our family adventures seem to be getting a little more adventurous too. But I’m glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and did it – even if I wasn’t quite saying that at the time!

Lots of memories made, batteries recharged and now I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

I’ve been a little quiet on here recently… but definitely not quiet behind the scenes!

It’s been a very busy few weeks getting VAT returns completed, tackling the first Making Tax Digital submissions and generally trying to clear the decks before some much-needed annual leave.

Tomorrow, the My Clear Accounts office closes for two weeks. ☀️

As a one-person practice (with a little help from Josh!), switching off completely isn’t always easy, but I’m going to do my very best to step away from the laptop and enjoy a proper break.

I’ll be back refreshed and ready to go towards the end of August, with September bringing the start of another busy period.

Thank you as always to my lovely clients for keeping me busy – and for getting all that information to me before I disappeared! 😄
