Sometimes it’s not the complicated stuff that causes problems. It’s the basics being missed 😬

We recently took on a new client and, while preparing their tax return, discovered an issue with their National Insurance record from previous years.

The result? They hadn’t been getting the credits they needed towards their State Pension.

It’s a good reminder that your accountant isn’t just there to submit a return. They should be checking the detail too.

Because small oversights can have much bigger consequences later 🫠

HMRC is currently writing to individuals working in the medical sector where information from private healthcare providers suggests consultancy fees may not have been included correctly on their tax return 🧐

If you receive one of these letters, you’ll usually have 30 days to check your position and respond.

A few important things to know:

📩 Your accountant or tax adviser may not receive a copy of the letter, so make sure you send it over to them as soon as possible.

🔍 Even if you believe everything has been declared correctly, HMRC still expects a response.

💷 If consultancy income has been missed, you may need to amend your tax return or make a disclosure to HMRC depending on how old the return is.

⚠️ Ignoring the letter could result in HMRC opening a formal compliance check, and any disclosure made after receiving the letter will be treated as prompted.

If you’ve received a letter and you’re unsure what to do next, don’t leave it until the deadline. Get in touch and we can help you review the figures and make sure your response is handled correctly.

Taking everything as salary isn’t always the most tax-efficient option, but taking everything as dividends isn’t necessarily the answer either.

For many limited company directors, the right approach can be a combination of the two, using a salary alongside dividends in a way that suits both you and your business 💬
