Payroll is becoming more complex, more visible and more closely scrutinised.

Changes to employment law, National Minimum Wage, holiday pay, statutory payments, pensions and reporting requirements all continue to increase the compliance burden on employers.

At the same time, enforcement activity is growing.

That means payroll is no longer simply about calculating pay correctly each month. It is about maintaining accurate records, applying legislation consistently, identifying risks early and being able to demonstrate that the right processes have been followed.

For many employers, keeping that level of knowledge and control in-house is becoming increasingly difficult.

Outsourcing payroll to a specialist provides more than processing support. It gives employers access to dedicated payroll knowledge, stronger controls, greater resilience and an experienced pair of eyes reviewing the information before payments are made.

A good payroll provider can also help spot issues that may otherwise be missed, including:

• National Minimum Wage risks
• Holiday pay errors
• Pension compliance issues
• Incorrect treatment of starters and leavers
• Statutory payment mistakes
• Weak approval and record-keeping processes

Payroll specialists do not replace an employer’s responsibilities, but they can make those responsibilities much easier to manage.

As payroll compliance becomes more demanding, specialist support is moving from being a convenience to becoming an important part of an employer’s risk management.
