We had a lovely visit from the Hold On Letting Go team recently, and it was a pleasure to present them with a cheque for ยฃ2,302 from our Charity Quiz Night!

That will provide six children with 12 months of vital bereavement care.

The Carleys, who made this happen, were all there to hand over the cheque: the organisers, Claire Ralph, Jenny Gilham and Lucy French and our amazing Quizmaster, Angela Goodwin.

A big thank you to everyone who came along, donated and made the evening such a success. Hold On Letting Go provides bereavement support and counselling to children, young people and their families, and we are proud to back them.

Accountable for your success.

Your accountant and your financial adviser really shouldn't be working in silos. Some of the best financial decisions come from those two having an actual conversation with each other, not just with you separately.

It makes sense when you think about it: your accountant can flag the tax implications of a decision, while your financial adviser looks at how it fits into the bigger picture. Between them, that covers a lot of ground, pension contributions, retirement and succession planning, extracting profits from the business, investments, inheritance planning, all the areas where tax and financial planning overlap more than people realise.

At Carleys, we're happy to work alongside whoever you already use, or with Verdant Financial Planning, who we know well and work closely with, to keep everyone pulling in the same direction.

Good advice on its own is valuable. Advice that's joined up tends to go further.

If you'd like your advisers working together rather than in isolation, get in touch.

๐Ÿฉบ Working full-time in the NHS AND earning privately? MTD could affect you.

If youโ€™re a medical professional employed by the NHS but also work privately as a sole trader, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax may apply to your private income.

With more regular reporting comes an even greater need to keep accurate, up-to-date records โ€“ and to understand what is an allowable business expense and what isnโ€™t. Getting this right from the outset can save valuable time and make your MTD reporting much smoother.

As specialist medical accountants and members of AISMA, the Carleys team know the ropes. We understand the finances of medical professionals and can help you prepare for MTD with confidence

Want to know how MTD will affect your private work? Talk to our medical team.

Self-employed? Itโ€™s worth checking your National Insurance record.

Weโ€™ve been made aware of an HMRC records issue affecting some people who started self-employment between 2015 and March 2024.

If HMRC didnโ€™t set up the self-employment correctly, there may be gaps in your National Insurance record, even where your self-employment income was correctly reported on your tax returns. These gaps could affect the number of qualifying years you have towards your State Pension.

HMRC says the issue has been resolved from 2024/25 onwards and will contact those it believes are affected, with letters expected by summer 2027.

In the meantime, we recommend checking your own National Insurance record online, as unfortunately weโ€™re unable to access this information on your behalf.

If you spot gaps covering a period when you were self-employed, please contact us to discuss the next steps. ๐Ÿค

There's no automatic fine for late submissions during the initial phase of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, which has led some people to assume the deadlines don't really matter yet. Worth being careful with that assumption.

Staying on top of your quarterly updates is still what keeps your records accurate and stops things piling up before year-end. MTD is a significant change to how income tax reporting works, and the businesses who get into good habits early tend to find the transition far less stressful than those who leave it until the rules tighten up.

If you're not sure what MTD means for you or how to prepare, get in touch with the Carleys team.

What a fantastic Friday night for Team Carleys!

Our whole office, together with family, friends and some of our clients, came together at Medway Rugby Club for a brilliant quiz night in support of our Charity of the Year, Holding On Letting Go.

After a VERY tight contest, congratulations to Harry and his team on taking the quiz-night crown!

A huge thank you to Angela for putting together the questions, Jenny & Lucy for organising the evening and securing some fantastic auction and raffle prizes, and Claire for taking charge of the mic and making the night so much fun.

But the most important result of the evening wasn't on the scoreboard.

Thanks to everyone's generosity, we raised an incredible ยฃ2,252 This will provide six children with 12 months of vital bereavement care through Holding On Letting Go.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, donated prizes, bought raffle tickets, bid in the auction and helped make the evening so special.

Is your payroll protected against costly mistakes?
Getting payroll right goes beyond paying your team on time. Good processes keep your business compliant and save you from unnecessary headaches down the line.

A few habits go a long way here:

๐Ÿ“ Keep accurate payroll records for at least three years from the end of the relevant tax year.

โœ… Double check new starter details, including legal names and National Insurance numbers, before their first pay run.

โšก Act quickly if a mistake slips through. Spotting an error within the current tax year means you can correct it through your next Full Payment Submission (FPS) rather than letting it snowball.

If payroll feels like one more thing on an already long list, Carleys' payroll team can take that pressure off and help you manage it accurately and efficiently. Get in touch to find out how we can support your business.

Business Asset Disposal Relief can be a real advantage for entrepreneurs, but only if you stay on top of the rules.

BADR, formerly known as Entrepreneurs' Relief, can reduce the Capital Gains Tax due when you sell all or part of a qualifying business, or close down a limited company. For qualifying disposals in the 2026/27 tax year, it applies an 18% CGT rate on qualifying gains, up to a ยฃ1 million lifetime limit.

The deadline is worth flagging too. You need to claim BADR by the first anniversary of 31 January following the tax year of disposal, so a qualifying disposal in 2026/27 would need to be claimed by 31 January 2029.

If you're planning a business sale or exit, it's worth speaking to Carleys early so we can help you understand the rules and plan ahead.

Audit season is well underway, and our team has been out visiting clients across the South East over the past few weeks. There's something to be said for sitting down with a client face-to-face, going through the details together in their own office.

That said, plenty of our audit work now happens remotely too, over Teams or Zoom, and for a lot of clients that flexibility just works better around their schedules. Whichever way it happens, the priority stays the same: a thorough, personal service that fits around you rather than the other way round.

If you need support with your audit requirements, get in touch with the Carleys team.

Growing fast? That's great news, but it can also leave your finances lagging a step behind.

As a business expands, what you need from your financial reporting changes with it. Annual accounts were probably fine when things were simpler, but they only tell you what happened months ago. By the time you see the numbers, the moment to actually do something about them has often passed.

That's where management accounts come in. They give you a much clearer, more current view of how the business is really performing, so you can catch cash flow issues before they turn into problems, make decisions with real confidence, and plan ahead instead of reacting after the fact.

Not sure if you've reached the point where management accounts would make a difference? Get in touch with the team at Carleys. We'll take a look at where you are and give you honest, practical advice on what would actually help.
