Management accounts are not just for bigger businesses 📊 They help business owners understand what is really happening before year end.

Instead of waiting months for annual accounts, you can use regular reports to make smarter decisions now.

▪️ See profit clearly
Management accounts show whether the business is actually making money after costs, wages, overheads and tax planning 💷

▪️ Spot problems early
Rising costs, falling margins, late payments or weak cash flow are easier to fix when you see them quickly 🔍

▪️ Plan growth with confidence
Before hiring, investing or expanding, you can check whether the numbers support the decision 📈

▪️ Understand what works
You can see which products, services or clients are profitable, and which ones may need repricing or reviewing 📌

▪️ Reduce year-end surprises
Regular reporting keeps accounts cleaner and makes tax planning easier 🧾

Want clearer numbers and better business decisions? We can help you use management accounts to plan ahead.

VAT registration is not based on your tax year. It is based on a rolling 12-month taxable turnover test 🧾📊

That means growing businesses need to check turnover regularly, not just when accounts are prepared.

▪️ Know the threshold
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000 ⚖️

▪️ Check it monthly
At the end of each month, look back over the previous 12 months. If you only check once a year, you may already be late 🔍

▪️ Understand taxable turnover
This includes sales that would be standard-rated, reduced-rated or zero-rated for VAT. Exempt income is treated differently, so mixed businesses need extra care 🧾

▪️ Plan before you cross it
VAT affects pricing, invoices, cash flow and bookkeeping. Leaving it too late can mean backdated VAT, penalties and interest 💷

Want us to check your VAT position and help you avoid late registration problems?

Auto-enrolment is not something you set up once and forget 💼⚖️

Employers have ongoing workplace pension duties from the day their first member of staff starts work.

▪️ Checking eligibility
Staff should be assessed correctly based on age and earnings. If someone’s pay changes, their pension position may change too 🔍

▪️ Sending the right letters
Employees need the correct pension information at the right time. Missing communication is a common compliance issue.

▪️ Paying contributions on time
Employee deductions and employer contributions must be calculated and paid correctly 💷

▪️ Keeping records
You should keep evidence of assessments, opt-ins, opt-outs, pension contributions and employee communications 🧾

▪️ Reviewing regularly
Payroll, pension uploads and bookkeeping should match, especially before year end 📊

Need help managing payroll and pension duties properly? We can review your setup and help keep you compliant.

Mileage claims can reduce taxable profit, but only if they are recorded properly 🚗🧾

HMRC expects clear mileage evidence, not rough estimates.

▪️ What to record
Keep a mileage log showing the date, start and end location, reason for the journey and number of business miles 🔍

▪️ What counts
Business journeys can include client visits, supplier trips, temporary workplaces or business meetings. Normal commuting does not usually count ⚖️

▪️ Current mileage rates
For the 2026/27 tax year, cars and vans are 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then 25p per mile after that 💷

▪️ Keep supporting evidence
Diary notes, invoices, meeting records or appointment details can help prove the journey was business-related 📌

▪️ Avoid common mistakes
Do not round up mileage, claim personal journeys or mix business and commuting without a clear split.

Want to make sure your mileage claims are accurate and HMRC-ready? We can review your records.

Your first invoice feels exciting, but it is also the moment to start saving for tax 💷🧾

Many new business owners spend what comes in, then get caught out later when HMRC deadlines arrive.

▪️ Save for tax straight away
Do not wait until year end. Move a percentage of each payment into a separate tax pot so the money is not mixed with everyday cash flow 📌

▪️ Remember profit is what matters
Tax is usually based on profit, not just sales. Profit means income minus allowable business costs 📊

▪️ Sole traders
You may need to plan for Income Tax and National Insurance through Self Assessment. The first bill can feel big because it often comes months after you started trading ⏰

▪️ Limited companies
The company may need to save for Corporation Tax. If you take salary or dividends, your personal tax position also needs planning 💼

▪️ VAT risk
If your business grows and you become VAT registered, the VAT you collect belongs to HMRC. It should not be treated as extra income ⚖️

▪️ Good habit from day one
Keep invoices, receipts and mileage records organised from the start so your tax estimate is based on real numbers 🔍

Starting a business? We can help you understand what to save, what to track and how to avoid tax surprises.

More sales do not always mean more profit 📈💷

A business can be busy, growing and bringing in more revenue, but still feel like there is no money left at the end of the month. That usually means pricing needs a closer look.

▪️ Sales are not the same as profit
Turnover shows what came in. Profit shows what is left after costs, wages, tax, materials, software, delivery and overheads 📊

▪️ Margins matter
If your costs increase but your prices stay the same, every sale may be worth less than you think 🔍

▪️ Watch hidden costs
Admin time, travel, revisions, packaging, card fees, late payments and staff time can quietly reduce profit 💷

▪️ Discounting can be risky
Small discounts may seem harmless, but they can quickly remove your margin if they are used too often ⚖️

▪️ Use your reports
Your Profit & Loss, cash flow and job costs can show which services, products or clients are actually profitable 📌

If your business is getting busier but cash still feels tight, it may be time to review your pricing. We can help you understand the numbers and price for sustainable growth.

Corporation Tax planning should not wait until your accounts are due 🧾📊

By then, most decisions have already been made and there may be fewer options to improve cash flow or reduce risk.

▪️ Review profit before year end
A simple profit review helps you estimate what Corporation Tax may be due and avoid a surprise bill later 💷

▪️ Check allowable expenses
Some costs may be deductible, but they need to be genuine business expenses and properly recorded. Missing invoices or unclear claims can cause issues 🔍

▪️ Plan investment carefully
If you are buying equipment, software or business assets, timing matters. Planning before year end helps you understand the tax and cash flow impact 📌

▪️ Review director pay
Salary, dividends and director’s loan accounts should be checked before the year closes. Leaving it too late can limit your options ⚖️

▪️ Protect cash flow
Corporation Tax is paid after the accounting period, but the money needs setting aside as profits are made ⏰

Want to plan ahead instead of reacting later? We can review your figures before year end and help you stay compliant.

Receipts and invoices are easy to ignore during a busy month, but they matter when it is time to prepare accounts, VAT returns or answer HMRC questions 🧾🔍

A simple system saves time and reduces risk.

▪️ Keep everything in one place
Use accounting software, cloud storage or a clear folder system 📊
Avoid receipts sitting in emails, bags, WhatsApp photos or car dashboards.

▪️ Attach evidence to transactions
Where possible, upload receipts and invoices directly against the matching bank payment. This makes checks much easier later ⚖️

▪️ Name files clearly
Use a simple format, such as supplier, date and amount.
Example: “Amazon-12-09-2026-£48.99” 📌

▪️ Separate sales and purchases
Customer invoices, supplier invoices, receipts, mileage logs and payroll records should not all be mixed together.

▪️ Add notes where needed
For travel, meals or mixed-use costs, add a short business reason so the claim is easier to explain 💷

▪️ Review monthly
Do not wait until year end. Monthly checks help catch missing paperwork early ⏰

Want a cleaner bookkeeping process? We can help you organise your records and keep your accounts HMRC-ready.

12/09/2026

🧾📊 Since 6 April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has applied to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. The threshold reduces to over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028.

▪️ What this means
You need to keep digital records using compatible software and send quarterly updates to HMRC ⚖️

▪️ It does not replace your tax return
You still need to finalise your figures and submit your end-of-year tax information by the deadline ⏰

▪️ Why new sole traders should care
Even if you are below the threshold now, your income may grow. Starting with clean digital records makes the change much easier later 📈

▪️ What to set up early
Separate business bank account 💷
Accounting software
Monthly reconciliations
A clear system for receipts, invoices, mileage and expenses 🔍

▪️ Common mistake
Leaving bookkeeping until year end. Under MTD, messy records make quarterly reporting much harder.

Starting as a sole trader? We can help you set up properly, stay compliant and avoid HMRC surprises.

Scaling can be a smart move 📈 but only if the numbers and systems can handle it. Here are the signs your business is ready to grow - and the red flags to pause and fix first.

▪️ You’re ready to scale when
You have consistent profits, not just busy months 💷
Cash flow is predictable and you can cover wages, VAT, and supplier bills on time
You know your true margins because bookkeeping is up to date 🧾
You’ve planned for tax liabilities (VAT, Corporation Tax, Self Assessment) instead of reacting to them ⏰
Your processes are documented so growth doesn’t rely on one person doing everything 💼

▪️ You’re not ready yet when
More sales still mean more stress because pricing and margins aren’t clear 🔍
You’re behind on records, payroll, or VAT reconciliations (errors show up when you grow) ⚖️
You’re relying on overdrafts to survive, rather than funding growth strategically 💷
You’re close to the VAT threshold but not tracking rolling turnover monthly 📊
You don’t have a plan for PAYE, NI, pensions, or subcontractor compliance if you hire 📌

Scaling without the right foundations can create HMRC issues, late filings, and cash crunches. Scaling with the right structure protects profit and makes growth sustainable.

If you’re thinking about hiring, increasing prices, going VAT-registered, or expanding services, we can review your numbers and build a plan that keeps you compliant and cash-flow positive.
