Swapped the spreadsheets for a golf simulator and a shooting game last Thursday. The LEVEL1 Networking event at St Mary's was a really good way to meet local business owners in a relaxed setting. I handed out a few cards along the way, so if we met and you need help with your accounts, get in touch. Southampton FC

Last Tuesday I went along to the AAT West Surrey and North Hampshire branch event on AI in accountancy. Good talk, and a useful reminder that AI can sound very confident and still get things wrong. Worth remembering as more of us use it. I go to events like this to stay up to date, so my clients get advice that reflects how things work now. Always good to spend an evening with other local accountants too.

Taking a client to the football? ⚽

It feels like an obvious business expense, but entertainment is one of those areas where the tax rules can catch people out. Just because your company pays for it doesn't mean you'll automatically get tax relief.

Worth knowing before you book the next Saints game through the business.

I try to stay close to what's happening in your business, not just show up once a year for the tax return.

That means I can flag ways to save tax before you make big purchases or decisions, while there's still time to act.

Get in touch if you'd like this kind of support.

Don’t let your tax return go to penalties. ⚽

Getting everything sorted early gives you time to check the figures, plan for the tax bill and avoid unnecessary stress.

Just because football’s coming home, doesn’t mean your tax refund is. 🏴

Missing expenses, CIS deductions and payments on account can all affect whether you are due a refund or have tax to pay, and if your bookkeeping is all over the place, you’re basically playing with no defence.

Can you claim work clothes on your tax return? 👕

This is one people often get wrong. 🤔

Just because you bought something for work, it does not automatically mean it can go through your business.

HMRC are strict with clothing, so it is worth knowing the rules before you claim it.

Some work clothing can be claimed, but everyday clothing is where people usually get caught out.

Can you claim home office costs?

Yes, but not the full amount.

This is where people can get caught out.

If you work from home, you can claim the business use part of costs like heating, electricity, rent, phone and internet.

But the claim needs to be fair.

You cannot just put all your household costs through the business because you work from home.

So yes, home office costs can be claimed, but only the business use part.

Attended the AAT North Hampshire Branch event at Hampshire Court Hotel last Wednesday, covering Current Tax Topics and Making Tax Digital with Past President Michael Steed. 📚

Tax rules and reporting requirements are constantly changing, which makes it essential to keep learning and stay up to date.

Events like this help me make sure the advice and support I give my clients is current, accurate and relevant to what is happening now. ✅

It was also great to meet Michael Steed and Christina Earls, both former AAT Presidents, and to connect with other accountants in the area. 🤝

A really useful session and a great reminder of the value of continuing to learn and develop.

Your phone bill is one of those costs that often gets missed, especially if you use the same phone for business and personal use. Getting it right means you claim what you’re entitled to and save tax where possible. If you’re self-employed and want help making sure your expenses are claimed properly, send me a message.
