🚗 Important update for employers and self-employed taxpayers: HMRC has increased the approved mileage rates from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.

This is the first increase in 15 years.

The changes are backdated to 6 April 2026 and could impact payroll reporting, employee expense claims, and self-employed tax returns. Nearly 400 UK employers have been publicly named for failing to pay the National Minimum Wage, with around 60,000 workers underpaid by a total of £7.3 million. Penalties totalling £12.6 million have now been issued to businesses that failed to pay staff correctly.
