RiverView Portfolio Ltd Chartered Management Accountants that work in partnership with our clients to help drive business. You are important to us.

Your accountant should offer you more than just a “number crunching” service. If we were instructed as your accountants, you would have direct access to our qualified professionals by telephone, email and occasional meetings so that we can advise you on financial or business management issues. When you instruct us as your accountants, the senior accountant that you meet and develop a working relationship with will remain as your accountant – your account will not be passed down to junior staff. With the obvious exception of the apprentices, all our staff are qualified professionals. Our bookkeepers are AAT (or equivalent) qualified and qualified IPP staff run our payroll bureau. Your accountants will be qualified CIMA accountants, which is the only accountancy qualification that has been specifically designed for accountants working in industry. As well as the compilation of accounts and the preparation of your tax returns, we will be there to help you identify and prepare for the many business opportunities and threats that arise during the life of every business. The fees that we will charge are agreed with you annually in advance and are fixed fees – this means that you have complete certainty over your costs and will never receive a surprise invoice. To spread the payment of our fees, we will arrange for our annual fees to be paid by standing order over twelve equal monthly instalments so that you are not burdened by larger one-off payments

You’ve got £10,000 of genuine surplus company profit.

What are you doing with it?

💷 Dividend - money you can use now

or

📈 Pension contribution - money set aside for your future

There is no automatic winner.

A company pension contribution can potentially be very tax-efficient.

A dividend gives you more flexibility today.

And sometimes the sensible answer is simply:
a bit of both.

The decision should come back to your company cash flow, your personal tax position, pension allowance and what you actually need the money for.

We’ve broken down the main differences in our latest guide. So which would you choose?

Pension? Dividend? Or a mix of both?

Used the company card for something personal?

Maybe it was the weekly shop. A personal subscription. A household bill. Or you just tapped the wrong card without thinking.

It happens.

But paying for something with the company card does not automatically make it a business expense.

If the purchase was genuinely personal, you need to work out what it actually was and record it correctly.

For a company director, that might mean:
• putting the amount through your director’s loan account
• repaying the company
• checking whether the company already owed you money
• considering salary, dividend or benefit rules where appropriate

And if personal spending has been building up for a while, it is worth checking the wider director’s loan balance too.

The important bit is not hiding the transaction in “expenses” and hoping nobody notices.

Our latest guide explains what happens when a personal bill is paid from your limited company account and what you should do next.

Taken more money out of your limited company than you meant to?

It might not be as simple as calling it a dividend afterwards.

If the payment cannot properly be treated as salary, a valid dividend, an expense repayment or money the company already owed you, it could end up sitting in your director’s loan account.

And that is where a few important questions start:
• Did the company actually have enough profit to support the dividend?
• Is the director’s loan over £10,000?
• When does the nine-month-and-one-day deadline fall?
• Could Section 455 tax become due?
• What are the legitimate options for clearing the balance?

For relevant loans made from 6 April 2026, the Section 455 rate is 35.75%, so this is not something to leave sitting in the accounts and hope sorts itself out.

Our latest guide explains what happens if you take too much money from your company, how an overdrawn director’s loan account can arise and what you can do next.

You’ve already got a full-time job.

Your employer pays you through PAYE.

Then your limited company starts making money too.

So how should the company pay you?

This is where the usual “director salary + dividends” advice can get misleading.

Your full-time salary may already be using your Personal Allowance and part, or all, of your basic-rate tax band. That means any salary or dividends from your company need to be looked at alongside what you already earn.

The options could include:
• salary
• dividends
• employer pension contributions
• leaving some profit in the company

The right answer depends on your existing income, the company’s profits and what you actually need personally.

Our latest guide breaks down the decision, including what happens to your Personal Allowance, how dividends sit on top of employment income and why the standard director-pay advice does not always fit.

£100k in the company bank account doesn’t necessarily mean £100k is yours to take.

Before you move money out of the business, you need to think about what is already spoken for:
• Corporation Tax
• VAT, PAYE and other liabilities
• payroll and running costs
• future investment
• the cash buffer the business actually needs

Only then can you work out what is genuinely surplus.

And once you know that, there is another decision to make - do you take it as salary, dividends, a pension contribution, or leave it in the company for now?

Our latest guide breaks down the key things limited company directors should consider before taking money out of the business.

Running a pub, restaurant or café? 🍽️

When your customers leave a tip, how does your business decide who gets what?

And did you know that the way you distribute those tips could affect how much National Insurance is due?

A properly operated tronc scheme can help hospitality businesses manage their tips while ensuring the correct tax treatment is applied.

With further changes to UK tipping rules being proposed, it's worth checking that your current arrangements are working as they should.

We've put together a guide explaining how tronc schemes work, what the tax rules mean for your business and what could be changing.

Whether you're running a busy restaurant or a small local café, it's worth understanding the rules before they cause problems for your payroll.
