Has HMRC signed you up for Making Tax Digital?

HMRC has started automatically signing up some sole traders and landlords who need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

If your qualifying income from self-employment and property was over £50,000, MTD may already apply to you for the 2026/27 tax year.

If you've received a message from HMRC, don't just file it away.

You may now need to:

Keep digital accounting records
Submit quarterly updates
Use MTD-compatible software
Continue to complete your year-end tax requirements
