We recently saw a sponsored article that was selling a vibrating bone plate that helps support skeletal health and active ageing. But the article was framed around women’s health and how we need to do better, and this piqued our interest 🧠

It’s well known that the industry has not done enough to support women’s health. There is limited coverage of female physiology in standard industry qualifications, and because of that, it trickles down into every level of the industry.

David Lloyd is one that has been trying to address this gap.

Every club now has a dedicated female health lead delivering seminars on pelvic health, breast support, puberty, menstrual cycle training, menopause and injury resilience. The sessions provide information, signposting and safe spaces for members to connect and share experiences that have historically gone unspoken.

And now they’re addressing the knowledge gap with training which includes modules on things like menopause, available to their teams.

So it’s got us thinking: what can your boutique gyms and studios offer in tailoring towards women’s health? Is it something your business is thinking about or prioritising? Perhaps something to the scale of this isn’t in reach, but could you have a female health lead pioneering change in your space?

ExerciseNZ is calling for the exercise sector to become a formal partner in preventative health, with a four-point plan designed to shift spending towards prevention.

When making this proposal, ExerciseNZ CEO said “We need action, not awareness. New Zealanders already know exercise is good for them. What we need now are policies that make being active easier, support prevention and recognise exercise as an essential part of improving our nation’s health.”

Their plan includes:

➡️ Removing employer Fringe Benefit Tax, which often acts as a deterrent for workplaces investing in things like gym memberships for their employees as it is seen as supporting overall health rather than addressing a specific workplace health and safety risk.

➡️ Getting registered exercise professionals to supervise prescribed rehabilitation to help improve adherence, accelerate recovery and reduce the risk of re-injury.

➡️ Linking registration fees to the Consumer Price Index

➡️ An hour of mandatory physical activity to be incorporated into every school day, not limited to organised sport or PE, but encompassing active play, fundamental movement skills, functional strength, active travel and movement breaks.

At Onda, we really believe that public health is intrinsically linked to the government. In the UK, there are so many policies behind the scenes creating barriers to better health. Beyond the occasional outdoor gym in a park, and a letter about how to lose weight from the GP surgery (don’t get us started), they are not doing enough.

What do you think about ExerciseNZ? Should more be done on a government level to support people with long-term fitness and wellness?

A bit of a cliché, but true.

It’s entirely possible to grow your top-line revenue while simultaneously destroying your profit margins. Yikes.

There are some dark secrets behind revenue growth, and just because the place is packed with clients doesn’t mean that the profit margin on the books is showing that.

But don’t worry, we’ve cleared some of the revenue smoke screen clouding operational issues and broken down the metrics you need to be focusing on to make sure your busy business isn’t lying to you about profits.

You can’t compete with big box gyms.

Independent gyms can’t offer memberships at the same low costs. So stop fighting them for entry level clients, the ones who just need access to a gym space.

You have to serve your niche, find your tribe. You cannot be for everyone.

If your studio is offering pilates, you need to serve the clients that are part of your niche. Are they into the pilates Instagram aesthetic? Or are you running pilates classes for people tight on time who want to get their pilates on in an old t-shirt and joggers? Both are great, but you likely can’t serve both together.

If you’ve landed on our page you’re likely working with everyday athletes, people who want to be the best. People become the people they are around, so if your clients want to be the best, they need to be around the best coaches.

Are you still trying to please everyone?

Traditional accounting looks straight through the rearview mirror. Your standard accountant will look back just once a year. By the time they tell you that a certain class or promo killed your cash flow, the money is already gone and the advice is 12 months out of date. You've either left a massive opportunity on the table or been financially drained by an issue you never saw coming.

At Onda, we look directly through the windshield at the road ahead.

Stop only looking back when it comes to your business finances. Send us a DM today, and let's begin looking to the future instead.

Welcome back to another Friday Night Takeaway 🍕

While things are quieter you may be looking at where to upgrade in the gym. That’s where the equipment debate comes in - lease or buy?

Buying is a bigger cost up front, but means you have no monthly payments going forward (unless you borrow of course).

Leasing means a lower upfront payment, and you’re committed to payments each month.

“Let’s buy brand new machines with cash so we own them free and clear” is not a bad idea. But that ties up a huge chunk of working capital in depreciating assets (they lose value over time). The working capital could be used for marketing, staff retention or expansion - and if you lease equipment you could do it all.

What do you think, would you lease or buy new equipment?

The business is busy, and the money is rolling in. Your classes are packed, the studio energy is electric, and the Stripe notifications are hitting your phone like clockwork.

You assume that the money is stacking up because the place is so busy. But you know what they say about people who make assumptions…

Discover how your packed studio is lying to you about profit margins in our latest blog 🔗 https://ondagroup.co.uk/the-illusion-of-the-packed-studio-the-dark-secret-behind-revenue-growth/
