Choosing MTD software? The right decision can save time, reduce admin and make Making Tax Digital much easier to manage.

Not all accounting software will suit every business. Before choosing an MTD solution, it is worth checking whether it is compatible with HMRC requirements, easy to use, suitable for your income type, accessible to your accountant, aligned with your bookkeeping process and capable of supporting your business as it grows.

For UK sole traders, landlords and small business owners, the right software should do more than keep you compliant. It should help you maintain accurate digital records, stay organised and make day-to-day financial management simpler.

MHC & Co helps businesses choose practical digital accounting solutions that fit how they actually work.

Accounting, bookkeeping and accountancy what’s the difference?

They’re closely connected, but they’re not the same.

Bookkeeping focuses on keeping accurate records of day-to-day financial transactions.

Accounting turns those records into useful financial information, helping you understand performance, cash flow and profitability.
Accountancy is the wider professional field that can include accounting, tax compliance, financial reporting and business advice.
Understanding the difference can help you choose the right support for your business and make more informed financial decisions.

MHC & Co supports businesses across the UK with practical accounting, bookkeeping, tax and advisory services.

Received a government grant for your business? Make sure it’s accounted for correctly.

Government grants can be a valuable source of support, but the accounting treatment is not always straightforward. How a grant is recorded can depend on its purpose, the conditions attached to it, and the accounting framework your business follows.

Our latest guide looks at:
• What government grants are
• The key accounting principles to be aware of
• Different ways grants may be recognised
• Common grant types and their treatment
• Practical points businesses should review before preparing their accounts

Getting the treatment right helps keep your financial statements accurate and gives you a clearer picture of your business performance.

Received an email claiming to be from HMRC? Don’t assume it’s genuine.

Phishing emails are designed to look convincing, often using tax refunds, penalties, urgent deadlines or requests for personal information to pressure people into clicking a link or sharing sensitive details.

Before you act, check carefully:
• Does the sender address look genuine?
• Is the message creating unusual urgency?
• Is it asking for personal, banking or payment information?
• Does the link take you somewhere unexpected?
• Can you verify the contact against HMRC’s official guidance?

HMRC advises people not to click links, open attachments or disclose personal information if they are unsure whether a message is genuine. Suspicious HMRC emails can be forwarded to [email protected] and then deleted. GOV.UK
You can also check GOV.UK’s list of genuine HMRC contacts before responding to an unexpected message. GOV.UK

Reverse Charge VAT in 2026: does it apply to your construction business?

If you’re a UK contractor, subcontractor or construction business, the VAT domestic reverse charge can affect how you invoice customers and how VAT is reported.

For qualifying construction services, reverse charge VAT may apply where the relevant VAT and CIS conditions are met. That can change who accounts for the VAT and how the transaction is recorded on the VAT return.

Our latest guide covers:
• When reverse charge VAT applies
• How construction reverse charge VAT works
• CIS and reverse charge VAT
• How to account for reverse charge VAT correctly

Understanding the rules can help reduce invoicing errors, VAT return issues and unnecessary corrections later.

MHC & Co supports contractors, subcontractors and construction businesses across the UK with practical VAT, CIS, bookkeeping and accounting guidance.

Dividends in your tax return: which tax year do they belong to?

Dividend income can be easy to misunderstand, particularly when payments fall close to the end of one tax year and the beginning of another.

For UK company directors and shareholders, getting the timing and reporting right matters. Your records should clearly show when dividends were declared, paid and received so they can be reported correctly on your Self Assessment tax return.
In our latest guide, we cover:

- How dividend taxation works in principle
- Why dividends can fall into different tax years
- Common dividend reporting mistakes to avoid
- How dividends should be included on your tax return

Good record keeping can make Self Assessment much easier and reduce the risk of incorrect reporting.

MHC & Co supports directors, shareholders and business owners with practical, straight-talking accounting and tax guidance.
