Taking time out to care for your family? Don't forget about your own financial future.
Did you know that women aged 55–59 had average private pension wealth of £94,000, compared with £145,000 for men of the same age, according to UK government research covering 2018–2020?
That's a significant difference, and one of the contributing factors is the time women spend away from paid employment or working reduced hours to care for children or relatives.
When you're juggling family responsibilities, pension contributions can easily become a lower priority. But several years of reduced contributions can have a lasting effect on your retirement income.
If you're planning a career break, currently working part-time or preparing to return to employment, I'd encourage you to consider:
• Whether you can maintain some level of pension contribution
• Whether you're receiving the National Insurance credits you're entitled to
• How your retirement savings compare with your longer-term goals
• Whether your household financial plan adequately considers both partners' retirement needs
Make sure the years you spend looking after others don't leave you financially vulnerable in later life.
A pension audit can be a valuable first step towards understanding where you stand and what you may need to do next.
