The Autumn Budget is likely coming this month β€” and we know it can feel a bit unsettling when you're running a business.

Our honest advice: hold steady. Wait for the actual announcements, then review what it means for you specifically β€” not what the headlines say.

We'll be sharing a plain-English breakdown once it's out. Follow us so you catch it first.

In the meantime, is there anything about your current tax position you've been meaning to look into? Now's a good time to ask.

One week until the 5 October deadline β€” have you registered for Self Assessment?

If you earned self-employed income for the first time in 2025/26, you must register with HMRC by 5 October 2026. The process includes setting up a Government Gateway account and waiting for your UTR to arrive by post β€” so if you haven't done it yet, now really is the time.

Don't risk a late registration penalty β€” it's easily avoided!

Work from home, even part of the time? Make sure you're claiming it.

Self-employed people can claim a portion of household costs β€” heating, electricity, broadband β€” as a business expense. Directors of limited companies have their own set of rules, but there's usually something to claim.

It's one of those things that gets missed because it seems complicated, but it really doesn't have to be.

Give us a call on 01277 549101 and we'll talk you through what applies to your situation. No jargon, just straight answers.

Are you paying too much income tax without knowing it?

For 2026/27, the income tax bands are:
β€’ Personal Allowance: Β£12,570 (no tax)
β€’ Basic rate: 20% on income up to Β£50,270
β€’ Higher rate: 40% on income up to Β£125,140

If your income is approaching the higher rate band, there are legitimate ways to reduce your tax β€” pension contributions, charitable donations, and salary sacrifice all count.

Knowing where you sit in the tax bands is the first step to planning effectively. If you're not sure, we'd love to help.

Is your current business structure still right for you?

If your profits have increased this year, autumn is a smart time to review whether operating as a sole trader or a limited company makes more financial sense.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer β€” but there's often a clear winner when you run the actual numbers.

We help business owners across Brentwood and Essex make this kind of decision every day. If you're curious, book a free call at infrontaccounting.co.uk or drop us a message.

Landlords β€” are you on top of your rental income records?

Section 24 means you can no longer deduct mortgage interest directly from your rental income before tax. Instead, you get a 20% tax credit on your mortgage interest payments. For higher rate taxpayers, this can make a real difference to your tax bill.

If you're a landlord and haven't reviewed your tax position recently, September is a good time to do it β€” before the Self Assessment rush.

We help landlords across Essex get their rental income reported correctly and plan efficiently. Drop us a message or call 01277 549101.

Did you know the Employment Allowance is Β£10,500 for 2026/27?

If you're an employer, this can reduce your Employer NI bill by up to Β£10,500 β€” and it's claimed through your payroll, so if you haven't set it up, you might be paying more NI than you need to.

We're halfway through the tax year β€” is yours being claimed? Give us a call on 01277 549101 if you're not sure. It's a quick check that could save you real money.

Honest question β€” are your mileage and expense records actually up to date?

A lot of business owners we speak to know they should be keeping better records, but life gets in the way. The good news is that September is a great time to catch up before the year-end rush.

Missed expenses mean missed deductions, which means a bigger tax bill than necessary. Not ideal!

If you're not sure what you should be recording, or how, give us a ring on 01277 549101 β€” we're always happy to help.

Pension contributions β€” one of the most tax-efficient things you can do as a business owner, and one of the most overlooked.

If your company makes a pension contribution on your behalf, it's treated as a business expense β€” which means it can reduce your corporation tax bill. And unlike taking extra salary or dividends, there's no income tax or NI to pay on it.

With April coming around again quicker than you think, now is a great time to look at whether your pension contributions are working as hard as they could be.

Do you have a workplace or personal pension set up? Drop a comment or send us a message β€” we'd love to help you make the most of it.
