Construction businesses lose money here all the time, not because they are doing anything dodgy.

It's usually because they are busy.

A few things worth knowing:

✅ Mileage between jobs can often be claimed.

✅ Tools, PPE and work clothing can count, but everyday clothes usually won’t, even if you wear them to site.

✅ If you work from home doing quotes, invoices or admin, there may be a home office claim.

TIP:
Insurance, bank charges, accountancy fees, software and training are all things people forget about.

HMRC’s rule is that the cost needs to be for the business. If it’s partly personal, only the business portion should be claimed.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART:
Keep the receipt.

If you don’t have proof, it becomes much harder to claim, even if the cost was genuine.

If you’re not sure what you should be claiming, send us a message or get in touch with us below. We’ll point you in the right direction : https://bit.ly/4v4qd2i

This is the bit that catches construction businesses out...

✔️ The job looks good.
✔️ The invoice has gone out.
✔️ The profit is there on paper.

🤯 But the bank balance tells a very different story.

That gap is where things get dangerous, especially when you’ve got staff, materials, rent, tax and retentions all landing at the wrong time.

If you’re growing and your cash still feels tight, this is worth watching.

At Ordinem Finance, we help construction businesses understand the numbers behind the bank balance, so they can plan earlier and make better decisions.

Give us a shout if you want us to take a look.

The £1,000 deadline nobody mentions!

Started a side hustle? Done a bit of freelance work? Made money outside your normal job?

This is where people get caught.

Once your self-employed income goes over £1,000, there is a deadline you need to know about.

Aga explains it in the video, including what date matters, what HMRC needs from you, and the simple thing you should start doing from day one.

Miss it, and you could end up with penalties for something that is usually quick to sort.

If you have just gone self-employed and you are not sure what to do next, please get in touch: https://bit.ly/4v4qd2i

Corporation tax isn’t usually where the problem starts. The problem is what gets missed before the bill is calculated.

❌ Pensions ignored.
❌ Expenses not claimed.
❌ Tax planning left until after year-end.
❌ Equipment bought at the wrong time.
❌ Salary and dividends taken without a plan.

That’s how limited company owners end up paying more than they need to.

At Ordinem Finance, we look at this before it becomes a last-minute rush. We keep the records tidy, flag the things worth looking at, and help you claim what you’re entitled to legally.

We’ve written a full blog on this if you want the longer version: https://www.ordinemfinance.co.uk/blog/how-to-reduce-your-corporation-tax-bill-legally/

Need your corporation tax position reviewed? Get in touch and we’ll talk you through it in plain English.

One question we're asked time and again is whether you really need an accountant to do it, or whether it's something you can reasonably tackle yourself. The honest answer is that you are not legally required to use an accountant. But for most company directors, using one is the sensible choice. Here is why.

Wondering if you need an accountant to file your company accounts? A clear guide for business owners in Bracknell and Berkshire.

You paid HMRC in January. Then July comes around… and there’s another tax bill.

For a lot of people, it completely catches them out.

It’s called a Payment on Account.

HMRC is basically asking you to pay towards your next Self Assessment bill in advance, one payment in January and one in July.

Here’s the part that matters:

If your income has dropped, you may be able to reduce it.

But don’t guess. Reduce it too far and HMRC can charge interest.

If July’s bill made you think, “why am I paying again?” give us a shout.

We’ll help you understand what’s due, what can be reduced, and how to plan for the next one.

👣 ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT! 💙

Aga is just 4 days away from taking on her 100km walk to raise money for a charity supporting the mental health and wellbeing of deaf children and young people.

From supporting children in schools, to bringing over 100 families together during the holidays, to providing a safe space at weekends — this charity is there every step of the way.

100km is a huge challenge… but it's nothing compared to the challenges some deaf children face every day.

💙 We need your help! If you haven't donated yet, please take a moment today to support Aga. Whether it's £5, £10 or whatever you can spare, every donation helps this amazing charity continue supporting children and families who need it.

Let's get behind one of our own and show Aga what you all can do! 🙌

Donate, share, and help make every one of those 100km count! 👣🙏

4 days. 100km. One very important cause. 💙

Help Aga Kumar raise money to support CSSEF

Meet Bethany 👋

If you’re already an Ordinem client, chances are you know Bethany very well.

Bethany has been with us since October 2022 and is a key member of the team as our Practice Manager. She helps keep things moving behind the scenes, supports clients day to day, and is always ready to help with a friendly answer when you need one.

She brings a strong technical background too, with a Bachelor of Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting, a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Accounting Sciences, and completed audit articles.

Outside of work, Bethany is also a mum to three children, so it’s fair to say organisation is very much part of her everyday life.

Friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to help.

We’re very lucky to have her as part of Ordinem.
