🚨 Beware the Overdrawn Director’s Loan Trap! 🚨
Borrowing from your own company seems harmless, but an overdrawn balance can trigger a domino effect of hefty tax bills. And no, you can't simply "write it off"!
If your balance creeps over £10k, you risk personal tax charges and a 15% National Insurance hit for your company. Leave it unpaid 9 months after your year-end, and your business faces a massive 35.75% Section 455 tax bill. Think wiping the slate clean is easier? Writing it off counts as a personal dividend, which triggers heavy personal tax and hidden NI costs.
💡 Pro Tip: Actively track your loan balance on your Xero or FreeAgent dashboard so it never catches you off guard!

We work with clients across a whole bunch of different accounting platforms, and hands down, the most common question we get asked is: “Which one is actually right for my business?!”
It’s a great question! Whether you’re leaning toward Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent, the best choice always comes down to how your business operates and what tech you already use.
So, we thought we’d put together a full, no-nonsense comparison to answer this exact question and help you find the perfect match for your setup! 🚀

⏳If you’re a sole trader or landlord earning over £50,000 a year, your first Making Tax Digital deadline has arrived!
By August 7th, you must submit your Q1 update. You can no longer enter numbers manually on HMRC's website—you'll need certified accounting software (like Xero) or bridging software if you want to stick with your spreadsheets 💻
😅Don't worry, you aren't paying your tax bill yet, just sending a summary! But getting your systems connected takes time. Check out our blog for the full timeline of MTD dates and why you shouldn't delay your setup.

⏳ 31 July is the HMRC Self-Assessment payment on account deadline.
Clear your balance before midnight on the 31st to stop HMRC adding interest charges.
Many business owners view this payment as an unavoidable hit. Smart leaders use it to manage working capital. If your profits dropped, paying the original estimate starves your business of cash. You can adjust this payment down to match your actual numbers.
💡 Proactive forecasting keeps cash where it belongs: inside your business.

🚨 Your business is leaking cash through a hidden tax blind spot.
The Chancellor recently increased the approved mileage rate from 45p to 55p. This change is backdated to 6 April 2026 and means you could be claiming an additional £1,000 in deductible expenses.
If your cloud accounting software still uses the old rate, you are actively overpaying tax.
Updating your systems now ensures you’re reimbursing your team members with maximum tax-free efficiency, keeps your profit forecasting perfectly accurate, and ultimately reduces your tax liability.
How are you tracking these backdated adjustments to protect your cash flow?
