Downsizing could be one option to consider when planning for retirement.

For some, moving to a smaller property can release capital that could then be used to supplement pension income and support their plans for later life.

Thinking about downsizing? Financial planning can help you understand what the numbers could look like before you make a decision.

If you own a business, have you thought about what could happen to it if you were to divorce?

It’s not an easy subject to think about, but for business owners, planning ahead can be important.

There’s no guaranteed way to completely protect a business in divorce. However, there are layers of protection that may help increase the likelihood of retaining ownership, including:

• Reviewing the assets you hold inside and outside the marriage
• Considering whether other assets could be offset against the value of the business
• Making sure shareholder agreements are up to date
• Considering whether a trust may be appropriate
• Putting a pre- or post-nuptial agreement in place

A pre-nuptial agreement can help establish which assets are considered matrimonial and which are not, potentially helping to ringfence a business. However, pre-nups aren't automatically enforceable in the UK and aren't a cast-iron guarantee.

Both parties should fully disclose their assets and receive independent legal advice, and agreements should be reviewed as circumstances change.

Planning for the possibility of divorce may not be something you want to think about, but understanding your options could help you make more informed decisions about protecting the business you've worked hard to build.

Think financial planning is only for people with loads of money, complicated investments or retirement just around the corner?

There are plenty of misconceptions about what financial planning actually involves.

💭 “I don’t have enough money to need a financial planner.”

Financial planning isn’t just about managing large sums of money. It’s about understanding where you are now, where you want to be, and what needs to happen to get there.

💭 “A financial planner will just tell me what investments to buy.”

Investments can be part of the conversation, but good financial planning starts much further back. Your priorities, family, lifestyle, retirement plans and the things that matter to you all form part of the bigger picture.

💭 “I’m too young to think about financial planning.”

You don’t need to be approaching retirement to benefit from having a plan. The earlier you understand your options, the more time you have to make informed decisions.

💭 “I can just sort it out myself.”

There’s plenty you can do yourself, but financial planning can help you step back from individual decisions and look at how everything fits together.

Ultimately, financial planning isn’t about having all the answers today.

It’s about having a clearer picture of where you’re heading — and making sure your money is working towards the life you want to live.

If you’re wondering whether financial planning could be useful for you, get in touch with Peak Fifteen for an initial conversation about your goals and where you are now.

Why do women often have less saved for retirement than men?

The gender pay gap is part of the picture, but it's not the whole story. Time out of the workplace, working part-time and taking on caring responsibilities can all affect earnings – and, in turn, pension contributions.

Over a working lifetime, these differences can add up. For people aged 55–59, the gender gap in private and personal pension wealth is 48%.

Our latest article looks at the relationship between women's pay and pensions, why the gap exists and some of the steps women can take to improve their financial position for retirement.

Want to help your children or grandchildren onto the property ladder?

For many younger people, getting onto the housing ladder can feel increasingly difficult. So it’s understandable that parents and grandparents may want to help.

There are several ways to do this, from gifting money or providing a loan to offering security to a mortgage provider.

But helping a loved one financially can have implications for your own finances and, depending on how you do it, your tax and estate planning too.

Before making a significant financial gift or commitment, it’s worth considering the options carefully and understanding the potential consequences.

If you're considering helping a family member onto the property ladder, get in touch with Peak Fifteen Financial Planning to discuss your options.

This lovely review comes from a client in our 18–34 age group - and it’s a great example of why starting early can be so valuable.

Their goal? To plan ahead and work towards a comfortable early retirement.

There’s no magic age at which you suddenly need a financial plan. For some people, it might be about retirement. For others, it could be buying a home, investing, protecting their income or simply making sure they’re making the most of the money they have.

Starting earlier can give you more time to make decisions, adjust your plans and let your investments work towards your longer-term goals.

As this client says, we’re still working towards the outcome - because good financial planning is a long-term process, not a quick fix.

But having a clear strategy, regular reviews and honest conversations along the way can make a real difference.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback.
