Exciting new chapter for HJP 🎉

Angela has successfully led HJP for more than 30 years. That's three decades of tax returns, three decades of Christmas jumpers at the office party, and three decades of the strong opinions we all know and love her for!

Angela isn't getting any younger (her words, not ours!), so she's decided to take some of the great advice she's given HJP's clients over the years and plan properly for HJP's future. (A sale to a faceless bigger firm was never on the cards)

Instead, from 1 October 2026, three brilliant accountants will become part-owners of HJP:

👏 Alice Hawkins ACCA
👏 Grace Vardy BA ACCA
👏 Tania Evans ACA ACCA

All three have been part of the HJP team for years, and many of you will already know them well.

Angela isn't going anywhere. She'll still be very much involved, now focusing on strategy and support (and still giving her opinion, of course 😄).

For our clients, nothing changes day-to-day: the same humans, the same great advice, and the same personal service. What's new is that the team looking after you now has a genuine stake in the firm's future, which gives us even more reason to keep getting it right for many years to come.

Congratulations Alice, Grace and Tania, and thank you Angela for 30+ incredible years! 🥂

A new regulatory home for HJP 🎉

We're moving our regulatory registration from the ICAEW to the ACCA!

This change reflects the qualification our trainees now study towards. Congratulations to Angela and Tania, who have both recently qualified with the ACCA and join Alice and Grace, who are already ACCA qualified. With so much of the team now ACCA, it made sense for HJP's regulatory home to match.

The ACCA is a global organisation and one of the UK's leading professional bodies for accountants. This is a behind-the-scenes move, and the quality, independence and standards of our work stay exactly the same.

📩 Clients: keep an eye out for an updated engagement letter in your client portal over the coming weeks. It's a routine update covering our new regulator and firm structure, plus our approach to AI. It's quick to review and sign, with no paperwork marathons, we promise.

We're excited about this next chapter and grateful to everyone coming along for the ride. Questions? Just get in touch. We're always happy to chat. 🤍

Do you have a company and then pay personally for your life insurance cover? 🤷

Did you know that your company can pay for life insurance for you and you will not be taxed personally on the cost of this as long it is set up right? 💡 Your company will also get to offset this cost so reducing its corporation tax. 👌

A win-win! ✨

With increasing costs for all of us, it is a good time to make sure the right party is paying the right costs.

🚩You will need to ask your insurance expert about what is called 'Relevant Life Cover/Plan'.

At HJP we suggest that you get your accountant and insurance advisor to talk to each other and then you will get the best result for you. 👏 Get in touch with us at www.hjpchartered.com.

⚠️ Quick but important one for anyone with life insurance 👇

Your life insurance payout doesn't have to be hit by inheritance tax - but only if your policy is written in trust. 📝

👎If it isn't, the payout lands in your estate. That means it could be subject to 40% inheritance tax before your family sees a penny of it.

👍Written in trust? It bypasses your estate completely and goes straight to the people you've chosen. No 40% IHT deduction. No delay waiting for probate either.

It's a simple thing to sort, and it makes a massive difference. If you're not sure whether your policy is written in trust, check with your insurer or talk to us and we'll help you explain this to your insurer.

For years, the tax system has strongly encouraged limited companies to go fully electric - and many of you have taken advantage. 🔌⚡

A couple of things worth knowing:

Your personal tax bill is creeping up. ☝️ If you already drive a 100% electric company car, you'll have noticed the Benefit in Kind rate rising each year since it sat at just 1% in 2021/22. From 2026/27 it goes up again to 4%. Still far more favourable than hybrid, petrol or diesel, but no longer free.

The 100% tax write-off ends on 1 April 2027. Right now, when your company buys a fully electric car, you can deduct the full cost against your profits and reduce your corporation tax bill. That relief stops next April.

📞If buying an electric car has been on your mind, it's worth a conversation now, while the numbers still stack up nicely. Get in touch and we'll talk it through for your situation.

Pensions are the single most tax-efficient way to extract profits from your company if they are made as employer contributions. 👌 However, they might not be the most practical.

There is no National Insurance to pay on these and the company will get a deduction on its corporation tax bill (and with corporation rates at up to 25% this is worth putting on your tax planning agenda). 💡

In some circumstances you can make contributions of £60,000 a year saving between £11,400 and £15,000 in corporation tax. 🙌

We really love how tax efficient pensions can be 😍 - but we recommend getting your accountant and Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) around the same table to get the best possible result for you. 🤗

Heads up to small business owners - UK accounting rules are changing.

If you prepare year-end accounts as a micro or small company, the way your revenue is counted is affected from 1 Jan 2026.

⚠️Here's what you need to know:
• New rules for how revenue is recognised in your accounts
• Applies to accounting periods starting on or after 1 Jan 2026
• Affects both small companies (FRS 102) and micro companies (FRS 105)
• Revenue may be recorded later than it is now
• Your reported profit for 2026/27 could look lower, even if your business is doing the same volume
• This might also reduce the amount of profits available for dividends
• This is most likely to affect you if you sell bundles, subscriptions, long-term contracts, or take upfront fees

☺️The good news:
• Your cash isn't affected, only how figures are presented
• We're already on it and will guide every client through the change
• Early planning means no nasty surprises at year-end

If you'd like to know how this might affect your business, get in touch and we'll walk you through it.

We all know petrol and diesel pump prices are high - and the good news is the tax-free mileage rates for employees who use their own vehicles on business have finally (after a decade) gone up! 🎉⬆️

The tax-free mileage rates are now:

🚗 55p per business mile for cars and vans for the first 10,000 miles per year, and 25p for miles over this
🏍️ 24p per business mile for motorcycles per year

⬆️Do you get more than this? Some employers pay more than this tax-free amount to help cover the real cost of running a vehicle for business. But did you know any excess above the tax-free rate is taxable (!), and subject to NIC. If you've paid your employees higher mileage rates than the tax-free rates, you need to treat the additional amounts as extra salary and put this through the payroll.

⬇️Do you get less than this? You can claim tax relief on the difference from HMRC on your personal tax return if you do one.

🔌Just in case you were wondering, if your employee's own car is 100% electric, you can still pay these tax-free rates for business journeys, tax and NIC-free.
