This is a great question, and one every business owner should know.
In most cases, you should keep receipts and supporting documents for at least 6 years.
Why? Because the HMRC can audit up to 6 years back and in some cases, even longer.
Holding on to those records protects you if questions come up later.
Hereâs what you should keep:
- Receipts for business purchases
- Invoices sent and received
- Bank and credit card statements
- Payroll records
- Tax filings
Scan and store everything digitally so itâs easy to find if you need it.

The good news is, there are some simple ways to avoid this going forward.
Start by estimating your taxes quarterly (mandatory for those with turnover of ÂŁ50,000 or more). If youâre self-employed or run a small business, you're typically expected to pay taxes throughout the year not just during tax season.
Working with a tax professional can also make a big difference. Theyâll help you calculate how much to pay and when, so youâre not stuck overpaying or falling short.
Another smart habit is to set aside money every month. Think of taxes like a regular bill.
A good rule of thumb is to save 25â30% of your income in a separate account just for taxes.
Lastly, make sure your bookkeeping is clean and up to date. Accurate records give you a clear picture of your income and expenses, which leads to better tax planning and fewer surprises.

You hop into Xero or FreeAgent thinking itâll be a quick fix and next thing you know, itâs more confusing than when you started.
Xero/FreeAgent might look simple, but itâs still an accounting software.
One small change can throw off your entire financial picture and even impact your tax bill.
Iâve seen a lot of well-meaning âfixesâ turn into bigger messes.
So I'm sharing a few real-life examples and simple ways to avoid them (save yourself the clean-up fees and the stress).
If youâre over the bookkeeping stress, I'm here to take it off your plate completely.
Letâs clean things up and keep them that way!

Business owners have been saying the same thing post-tax season and honestly, these lessons are worth paying attention to:
đ "I needed a bookkeeper... like yesterday."
Scrambling to organize a yearâs worth of finances right before the deadline? Not ideal!
Having a bookkeeper throughout the year takes the pressure off and helps you stay ready, not reactive.
đ "I shouldâve filed an extension sooner."
Extensions arenât a bad thing, theyâre a smart move when youâre behind on your books or still pulling documents together.
Filing early gives you breathing room and helps you avoid rushed (and costly) mistakes.
đ "I didnât pay enough in taxes and now Iâve got penalties."
I hear this one a lot. Forgetting to set aside funds or missing estimated payments can hit hard.
The fix? A clear tax strategy and a better system for staying ahead.
Tax season can feel like a wake-up call but itâs also a great time to reset.
Take the lessons, build better habits, and letâs make next year way less stressful.

Your Balance Sheet shows what your business owns, owes, and how much itâs actually worth.
But I get it, it can look like a wall of numbers at first glance.
The good news?
Once you know what to look for, it becomes one of the most powerful tools for understanding the financial health of your business!
Hereâs the simple formula to keep in mind:

"Do I really need Xero or an accounting software for my business?"
The short answer? It depends.
If you want clear reports, easy tax prep, and better money decisions? Then yes!
If youâre just starting out or only have a few transactions each week, a simpler system might work but you still need to track everything. Spreadsheet will do for the time being (check my link in bio).
