One of the biggest myths about probation?
That you can sort the paperwork later.
You can't.
Probation is an assessment period.
It isn't a different employment status.
From your nanny's first day, you still need to:
• operate PAYE where required
• issue payslips
• calculate holiday entitlement
• assess workplace pension duties
Getting everything set up correctly from the beginning means fewer headaches later.
That's exactly what we help families do.

You've found someone your children adore.
They're settling in beautifully.
Everything feels like it's working.
Now comes the bit many parents don't expect:
When you employ a nanny, you're also an employer.
That means employment law applies to you too.
And from 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal claims is expected to reduce from two years to six months in England, Scotland and Wales.
The first six months of employment will become even more important.
Now is the perfect time to review your nanny's contract, probation period and payroll arrangements.
Remember, probation doesn't change your responsibilities as an employer.
Your nanny should still be set up correctly on payroll, receive payslips, accrue holiday entitlement and be assessed for workplace pension enrolment from day one.
Our latest guide explains everything you need to know.
