Avoid making numerous applications for credit within a short time period. (Lenders view such actions as you being desperate for credit);
Use free eligibility calculators where possible when seeking credit to confirm chance of acceptance as they do not impact your credit file;
Do NOT withdraw cash on credit cards OR arrange Payday loans (which lenders consider to be poor money management.

If rejected for credit, check your credit file for possible errors and if relevant, have them corrected;
If necessary, use a 'credit rebuild' card to restore past problems and repay the debt on your new card in full each month;
Avoid using credit repair companies. Use non-profit making companies instead such as Citizens Advice, Money Advice Service, Stepchange, etc to gain advice / assistance.

Timing of your application is important. County Court Judgements, etc remain on your file for 6 years. So, if possible, delay the application until these 'drop off' your file;
Ensure all active contracts (eg mobile phone) on your credit file "attached" to you show your current address. Contracts linked to you at different addresses can cause problems.

Avoid making multiple applications for credit in a short space of time (as lenders believe you are relying on credit and therefore, pose a higher risk);
Check your credit file regularly (annually) for errors (even an incorrect postcode can cause issues);
Check for fraudulent activity on your credit file and inform the credit agency accordingly.
